3DS appearance for Saber Rider and The Star Sheriffs
The marvellously named 1980s anime series Saber Rider and The Star Sheriffs is set to appear on 3DS in game form.
A strong frontrunner for the most niche 3DS game, Saber Rider and The Star Sheriffs was announced just yesterday in Leipzig. It’s based on an eighties space-western anime series heavily revised for an American version – think something along the lines of Thundercats, just a tiny bit more obscure. This 3DS (and iPhone) revival is developed by German outfit Firehazard Studio.

A moodier look compared to the TV show permeates the concept art that accompanied the press release.
Never heard of them either? Firehazard have only been behind a handful of titles in their native land; two DS driving-school education titles and a DS port of PC puzzler Safecracker. Saber Rider certainly appears to be more popular in Germany than it is elsewhere. Nonetheless, if you do have fond memories of the anime, they seem to be making some good decisions. They’ve released a few teaser posters, and the art style seems to be a little more hard edged and less garish than the original – how you might remember kids TV, not how it actually was. They’ve also got original composer Dale Schacker on board, so except eighties powersynths left right and centre.
Managing director Chris Strauss certainly seems excited; “we at Firehazard Studio have all been in love with the powerful Star Sheriffs and there almighty Star ship Ramrod.” Snigger.

Why yes, that is a robot horse.
Unintentional innuendo and awkward English aside, Firehazard and license holder World Events Productions seem to be taking the project very seriously. It might not be the Firefly game that would make thousands of sci-fi fans explode with joy, but this old-school take on TV space-western could prove a retro treat for anime fans with a 3DS. And of course, there’s a giant stompy robot chucked in for good measure.

Power stride indeed.
