If you don't like it, don't play it. It's as simple as that. Others may like it. I agree with you though, which is why I don't play excessively violent games anymore. I don't go around stopping others from playing these games though. I'm not saying you do, but just general people.

I agree. It seems now the game HAS to have killing in it in order to seem cool. Nintendo thank goodness, doesnt use this content in it's mainstream games, and honestly, im happy about that.

Yes, games did get more violent and over the top.
Which isn't a bad thing AT ALL

Developers have to send a message and they will give it to you damnit!

I noticed sexy started(and maybe violence) was when lara crofts game debut and namco's splatterhouse respectively.
Mature games arent for everyone, even though almost every kid i know plays call of duty (not even kidding)

parents have to know their child if they let their kids play m for mature games, some know what it means and understand it. Most dont do any

Indeed it does deepen the story, but there are many vulnerable audiences that will take the message in in different way, it could be getting scared, being offended, thinking it's cool to be violent and more.

Like people have said, asking for your age isn't enough as some parents buy the games for their children, with digital downloads, children an easily lie about their age and use a parent's credit card, there are still people over 18 which are very vulnerable and receptive, there's too many different variables.

Do I think modern day video games with intense violence is going to far?

No. They haven't really gotten to the point where the scenes in the video games are so disgustingly realistic and grotesque. Yes, some games (such as the recently released Max Payne 3) are very violent. But I don't really think they have really pushed overboard yet because of the realistic factor.

I don't think mature content is a problem, I think the young kids playing the mature content is a problem. I'm pretty sure it's a proven fact that violent video games have a effect on children.

I think violence is okay now and again it's alright in my opinion but the sexual content if I'm allowed to say the S word is NOT okay. It's just wrong remember secondary school children hear about these games from their mates they go and buy them and see everything! At least they can do is cut out that bit.

Really, repetitive killing desensitizes people MAJORLY.
After finally getting to play some M games, I've noticed that I'm not bothered by death as much as I used to be.
And that can be problematic... Everyone else is mourning and I'm just like,"Meh."
    That just makes EVERYONE angry.

They really just need to quit making so many of these games. Sure, keep a few, but the Fallout games, for instance, are designed to be grotesque. Adults and children alike don't need the slow-motion severing of tendons they see when blowing some dude's head off in Fallout 3 and New Vegas....

Although it could be worse. They could make a Human Centipede video game.

Killing in video games is tedious? The range of video games and the variety of ways that you kill people in them varies so that it doesn't feel tedious. Couldn't you say it gets tedious to jump from platform to platform after so many games of it? Or about any other genre really.

I've played Fallout, Gears of War and games like L4D with plenty of violence, some not against humans; can I handle seeing violence in video games and movies better than when I was younger because of this? I would say so but does that mean I would feel the same way about the same level of violence in reality? No it does not. I am mature enough to realise the difference between fiction and reality, right and wrong; a child would have more trouble understanding this but that's what the rating system is for.

The slow motion dismemberment/severing of tendons etc in Fallout 3, while it may not be entirely necessary, does add a cinematic effect of sorts that looks impressive and feels satisfying. I do not see anything wrong with displaying violence like that, I am somewhat desensitized by violence in video games but I understand the line between fiction and reality so I can enjoy shooting someone's face off in a game but never want to do it in reality.

Violence in media has been around for a long time and it isn't going to go away anytime soon.

I do think video games have become too violent and/or sexual, and I worry about the potentially dangerous psychological effects said video games could have on the human mind; especially the developing minds of young children. This isn't to say I think video games necessarily cause violence in those who play them, or that there is something wrong with people who play overly graphic video games, but one has to admit that it isn't exactly healthy; especially since this is done for entertainment, and thus subconsciously associated with such in real life. Although more on that in a moment.

Think of it like this. Every piece of information fed into your brain affects it in some manner. After all, every piece of information that is processed by your brain is at least temporarily stored, changing the ways the neurons in the brain connect to one another, and thus affecting your brain in some manner (it isn't currently known how the mind stores long term vs. short term memory, as both form identical neuron connections, although it is thought that the body distinguishes between the two based on when and how the neuron connections are activated. Still, despite what people think, the neuron connections formed by short-term memory are permanent unless destroyed by some external action, meaning that information supposedly stored in short-term memory is still present, just very hard to access). Since video games offer at least two methods of input into your brain (audio and visual), the video game you are playing is feeding your brain two different signals of information, each of which is changing the chemical structure of your brain. Thus, whenever you play a video game it is influencing your brain in some manner.

Now realize that the brain processes the information fed to it by a video game no differently than it processes the information fed to it by any other source. The brain does not distinguish between the information fed to it by two different sources; violence that occurs in a video game is no different than violence that occurs in, say, a book, as both are the same action, just being registered in the brain through different types of input. Thus, the only ways violence in a book and violence in the video game can be distinguished by the brain are through the variables involved in each event.

We've established that all information processed by the brain affects it, and that the brain can only distinguish between different actions based on the variables surrounding the actions. The problem with overly graphic video games in recent years is that their are fewer and fewer variables separating the violence and sexuality in video games with the violence and sexuality in real life. For example, one major factor that helped the brain distinguish between video games and real life were the graphics. It was fairly easy to distinguish between the visual input composed of pixelated sprites or low-polygonal models of the SNES/n64 days and the highly detailed visual input of real-life. However, in modern times it is getting to a point where the brain can no longer distinguish graphically between real life and a video game. Within 2-3 years, modern technology will be able to display graphical information in such detail that the human eye cannot differentiate between what is real and what is not. That's one major wall normally used to separate video games and real life taken down.

The atmosphere of modern games have changed with time as well. While most games used to be 3rd person perspective, many are now played in first-person, as if we're really there. Instead of taking place in an unrealistic fantasy world, games take place in a gritty and realistic graphical setting that often times mirrors that of real life, if not a bit exaggerated. The ways we can interact with a game have changed as well. Rather than having a limited number of actions we can preform, we have huge, dynamic worlds in which we can interact with dynamic characters in a realistic fashion and perform any number of actions.

What I'm getting at is that soon our minds may struggle to differentiate between what is real and what is not. Subconsciously, our minds may begin to draw connections between video games and the real life due to the extreme similarities between the two. Then the mature graphic content which normally would affect your daily life very little might begin to affect you more than you realize due to the aforementioned subconscious connections. I'm fairly certain this has already begun to occur, and will continue to occur more and more as video games strive to perfectly mirror real life.

(And if anyone doesn't think the brain has the capacity to store all the information it collects, the brain has been argued to store anywhere between 1 to 14 petabytes. Since 1 petabyte is about 100 years worth of video footage, your brain can store a lot of memory.

Also, I'm not saying your brain stores every individual detail. Much like a computer compresses programs and pictures to make them smaller, your brain does the same thing with information. Despite this, each individual detail still affects the overall memory, much like a few pixels in a picture or a few lines of code in a program can have a large impact on how the picture looks or how the program works.)

You really think video games take that much of an impact on a person??? what.. I play violent games and I'm not affected by them. I dont even own a gun or like violence in reality... I hate fights. I also have friends who have the same interests as I do and we aren't bloodthirsty, of course it depends on the person. you're writing as if everyone who plays violent video games brains just switch to kill mode (eventually).

You have to realize most published games that are considered as violent that have an objective.

Gears of War - fight to save the world. . war is ugly
Metal Gear Solid- fight to save the world .. war is ugly
Halo - fight to save the world.. war is ugly
Rockband- fight to save the world.. war is ugly

I think you're talking about multiplayer games. People probably use multiplayer because the person is filled with hate.. "i want to kill that peiceof schnitzel huntheuniverse!!!" rip his head off and play basketball with his head... hehe hahaah!

When it's not like that At ALL you're seeing it wrong.. its competitive... the competitive nature is always in us, weather you like it or not. I bet you were trying to challenge someone by writing that everyone who plays over the top violent games will have violent intentions.

what bothers me is why idiot parents let their kids play violent video games. i think parents should be aware of what their children play. People play video games to escape reality. The brain does get affected but it doesnt mean that everyone who plays Call of Duty will go postal some day. Books and movies are as violent as video games are.. maybe even worse. If someone gets a reaction from the violence then you know something is wrong with that person. I had to do a research project related to this.

when you play a "violent game" take a look around.. the game is not entirely violent, it's also engaging and way more beautiful than what I've played before

    Ouch.

Well, it's a proven fact that violence has an effect on a person, no matter what they may believe. 4 realz brosky.

Also, I don't think we're targeting all M-rated gamers on that front, seeing as some are ACTUALLY mature enough to handle them. There will always be exceptions to anything.

If mature content is getting worse then it only means than the people playing the game need to be more mature than before. A game with a lot of sexual and violent content is already being restricted to older gamers, but ignorant parents are still (letting)/buying their children (buy) these nasty games.
Mature content wouldn't be a problem if parents were more wary of the warning labels. They're not there for decoration!
Parents must pay more attention to what their kid is playing (even if they're a teenager) because only the parent knows how mature their kid is.
If parents did this, mature games would be fine!

As for adults, only a few of them aren't mature yet so really they're irrelevant.

When they make a game with mission called "Rape the girl" and "Slaughter the Elementary School Kids" theeeen it has gone too far. :0

But until then, the scale has not yet been tipped. Well in my opinion it hasn't yet.
(Not like those missions will ever be in a game anyway)

Well it is Japanese, so it's not too strange for Japanese standards I guess. It was still, as you would have guessed, a controversial release.
