It could get entirely worst especially with Kinect. Mature content can influence lots of people to do bad things.
as long as the people who are playing the game (even if thier a kid) is mature enough to know its just a game. Then I dont see any problem with them playing it. On the other hand I think Sexual content in Video games is a bit to much. And the language is pretty bad in todays video games. The S word was enough but now I see F-words. I do think video games may be going a bit over board but as long as the person playing it is mature. I dont see any problem.
This abundance of violence, mainly gratuitous violence and sexual content in a huge majority of today's best selling franchises isn't exactly something I didn't see coming, but much like movies that go that route, I've become rather numb to it all. The abundance of these games and fact that people really do demand more games that include mature content is becoming more and more of an issue as technology and the world-wide gaming industry progress. My response to it all is to stray away from the unoriginality that most of these games possess by 'straying away' from those games all-together. I do think that this unrelenting/uninspired mature content fetish has gone too far when I tend to avoid a few sub-genres this long! I have several guilt-free wishes that I think everyone would benefit from in the long-run, one of them is to eradicate this high demand for games with mature themes...it may be one of my more recent wishes, and one that hasn't been thought-out all-that-much, but i'd still be optimistic to see what resulted from it.
I think the desire for mature content comes from the desire to live out suppressed debauchery of the mind. Deep down inside, most people at one point of time have desired to do something horribly wrong, even though they'd never do it personally and would condemn anyone who did. After all, the social and moral consequences of performing said debauchery would far outweigh any sort of sick pleasure one would derive from performing said actions. Where video games comes in is they allow people to preform these morbid fantasies without any of the real-life consequences. If you go around killing people in the real world, you get yourself executed, or are at least thrown in jail for life depending on where you live; not to mention that you would break the trust of most of your friends and family. But in a video game, killing someone doesn't hurt you at all personally. It may negatively affect you in-game, but that's the worst thing that can happen. As I stated, in video games you can get away with horrible things you'd never get away with in real life. That's the appeal. And as video games get more and more realistic, they become closer and closer to fulfilling these morbid fantasies, as there are fewer and fewer differences between the game and real life. As the textures and models become more and more realistic, soon you won't be able to tell the difference between a character on a screen and a person in real life, so you can basically kill someone in real life, but again, without any of the consequences. That's the appeal of mature video games, and why they've become more and more common as technology has improved; because it allows you to come closer and closer to fulfilling your darkest desires. It's a depressing thing to admit, but it's sadly true.
Now I've understood the appeal of mature content in videogames for a while, and although I can't speak for everyone, a good amount of people undoubtedly are interested in the fullfilling of these 'desires' through a virtual medium. I in particular have become pretty numb to that specific kind-of stimulus for too long now, which is why I would rather see less demand for mature content in games, because it's the abundance of this content that's responsible for this 'numbness'. Violence and Sexual Content had better stay in the videogame world, but now with a lot of the focus being on the Violence and Sexual Content in many games today, certain other factors in videogames are focused on less/being overlooked entirely, which doesn't necessarily have to be a negative thing, yet I can't say I'm impressed or even some-what contempt with what this [overly] high demand for mature content has brought the gaming community. So I still think that there should be less demand for it, but I feel as though I have to do so in wish form, since the likelihood of this changing soon seems to require wishful thinking.
There will always be content available with gruesome violence and highly explicit sexual content. It's not really something that is avoidable. The thing is, that's why games have ratings. It is very easy to avoid those games, and, along with "adult" games, there will always be games available for all ages. I don't think it's possible to avoid games like this. And what's the point, really? It's like trying to fight a battle against one enemy when another has defeated you long ago. What I'm speaking of is basically the internet. If I were to quote Soupaface, Games way worse than what you'd possibly expect are already in existence. In fact, they are everywhere. Millions. People who want them will always have access to them. As long as Nintendo isn't making first-party games like this, I really don't care.
Sorry for the bump, but I just never got around to this. Don't bury the threads until I get to read them! Anywho, the way I see it, things are getting bad, but they can go a lot worse. In fact, I haven't seen an AO+ (Adult Only) game on the market for a while. (I don't go looking to see em', but I'm sure that there would be some sort of info on an AO game on the market). But the violence in todays games do make people less sensitive to harmful acts. And because people always play such games, their whole mindset changes on matters and effects their attitudes with everyone they know because they are being influenced by such violence not only in the videogames, but also in the community that support and play the game (online). Just my two sense.
This is absolutely the most important aspect of the whole subject, games can feature any legal content the market will allow but these dough-mitten parents who just give their kids whatever they want are worse than irresponsible. I worked with a nice enough girl but she would let her little boy play all the military kill games and I tried to, in a good-nature d way, talk to her about it and told her I still didn't let my boys play certain games and even with games that are open box I insist they need to act in a noble and respectful fashion and make "right" choices, or they don't get to play. I think there's room for all kind of content in games, why limit it? Serious adult games are fine if tempered with wisdom on the part of the consumer, the rarest of precious commodity these days.
Yes but No, it Varies on the game. Like Halo, I consider that a minor M rated game. Yes, A bit more violence and sexual features do deepen a game, but I don't like it when all that happens in a game are Sex, Swearing, Constant shooting, ETC... Personally, I think the parents should make the choice on whether you can own an M game or not.
I was thinking about it, and what if the furture of gaming is like a virtual reality? As in playing in a digital world and doing such actions yourself. I think that'd be way too far. This world is just messed up.
It's harming the right kind of people my friend. Zombies need re-killing. Some crime lords rate a Tequila-esque, slow-mo bullet time bring down. Man's gotta grapple with that primal urge somehow, bring on the bad guys I got something for 'em! --- merged --- I committed some heinous acts during my long run in Fallout 3 then did a quick Karma turnaround and became a Saint on Earth, if only life were so easy. You are a deep thinker, I appreciate that. There are things I'm pushed to do in games to advance story that I'm not always happy about in my own context, like if it were up to me I wouldn't sneak up in my Chinese Stealth Suit and chew you up with my Auto Axe from behind but doggone it you're bewtixt me and that empty coke bottle, sorry. Motivation plays a huge role in it for me, the character needs to be defending against attack, like Gears of War is brutal but at the same time you are the guy fighting for survival against an invading foe, thus your cause is just. That means a lot to me. Just like real life when given the chance at free will try and do right at all times whenever possible, except for the occasional lapses of course!
I find it desturbing that you guys say that some mature content is not ok, but most of it is. Even though you claim you wouldn't do such things in real life, what if you did? How would you feel knowing that you reacted in such a way because you exposed yourself to the wrong kind of entertainment? You're basically saying that acting immorally and killing people is ok. Think about it.
Killing people is 0kay if it saves lives, IMO. For example, Bin Laden. He had to be killed to prevent to the deaths of more innocent civilians in the future. In most video games, that's the justification. Except for GTA. GTA has nothing to take away from it that's any good for an incompetent mind.
