I really want Banjo-Kazooie on the 3DS(Rather a new game instead of a remake though) an I haven't played DK64 so I would love to get the chance too.
Donkey Kong 64 was a great game, but I don't feel it's good enough to be one of Nintendo's top games. It may have been one of your favorites, and I thought it was pretty fun, but I just don't think this will happen. They mostly tried to appeal to the majority crowd. They knew most of their fan-base wanted Ocarina of Time 3D, and a large part wanted Starfox. I don't think there is a comparable amount of fans out for Donkey Kong to buy this game. But if they did do this, I'd like to see the multiplayer online. Because that was one thing I loved about that game. It had some great multiplayer.
I sent a message to all of my friends with a 3D image someone did that looked like a DK game and some thought it was a remake. Haha, it would be fun and cool to see a new game or a remake.
I always thought that DK64's lack of presence on the VC was due to the sheer complexity of the game (requiring an expansion pak being the big thing). Putting the time and effort into making an already big game work under Nintendo's in-house emulator may just be a bit more than they want to bother with. If anyone has any source on Jetpac being the real issue, I'd like to see it, since I really doubt that's the case that they can't release it. DK64 was an alright game in retrospect. Yeah, it's one huge collect-a-thon that can be laborious at times, but it did have some moments that it was genuinely fun. Multiplayer being my favorite .
@Zok: I don't think the expansion pak has anything to do with it. Majoras' Mask required the expansion pak and it was released on the Virtual Console. Both are also Nintendo first party titles (Nintendo owns the rights to it, they contracted it out to Rare to make) and the both are top rated games so...why not? Nintendo should release Donkey Kong 64 on the 3ds and fix the bugs in it as well.
I'm really confused why it wasn't released on Virtual Console. I know it was made by Rare but DKC was released and it was mad by Rare. It may have to do with some various cameo's to other Rare games in it like Banjo-Kazooie, but that doesn't make sense as they could edit them like Rare did for Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie for Xbox Live Arcade and they even left some in like the Donkey Doll in Tooie. I understand in the case of Diddy Kong Racing being remade for DS and not released on Virtual Console due to it including some major Rare characters like Banjo and Conker, but I don't think DK64 had any Rare Exclusive Characters in it.It did have a cancelled stage for Banjo-Kazooie put into it but that shouldn't have messed with it not getting rereleased. It's just a confusing matter. Maybe Nintendo just didn't release because they didn't want to, I mean they still haven't released a lot of games from their past systems on VC like Yoshi Island.
If any game appears in the Donkey Kong universe, you can bet good money that Retro Studios will be doing it. Nintendo own the Donkey Kong intellectual property, and will dish out the development funding to one of their current trusted studios; and not Rare. It will be very unlikely that Rare (or 'Ultimate Play The Game') owned IPs will appear on the 3DS soon. Much to my disappointment; as I'd love a handheld version of Blast Corps (), or even eShop releases of It's Mr Pants (GBA), Jetpac, Sabre Wulf (not the GBA version), Knight Lore, Alien8, Underworld, Attic Attack... etc.
I don't have the VC build of MM, but the copy made for the GCN was buggy and froze more often than it should have. Is the VC's emulator less buggy than the Gamecube's? Still, I would imagine that big games like DK64 have qualities that need to be addressed differently from game to game, especially since Rare is known to exploit a few tricks in the 's hardware (with Conker being an extreme case). However, I'm no programmer.
Notice Rare mentioned on their Twitter account that they do not own the rights to the game, but Nintendo does so its nintendo's fault i think the reason that they didnt put it on virtual console and dosent want to make a remake on the 3ds is because they are probably afraid of lawsuits from Microsoft. i dont know why or how, but that is probably why. but i wish they would make one because it probably be awesome!!!
I could totally see this happening. They remade LoZ: OoT for the 3DS, a donkey 64 3D would be incredible! It would sell well too, I think that Rare should do this. It would sell well, and if made right a lot of the fans would fall in love with the game- new and old.
I really hope they make one. Oh my gosh! I just thought of something, they could reveal it at E3 this year!!!
Yes it did actually, Mario was not called Mario in the original Donkey Kong. He was called Jump Man and was Nintendo's first hero. So they renamed him Mario and started featuring him after that. Donkey Kong came out in the Arcades before Mario Bros. came out.
As I remember, yes, Jumpman was later called Mario because Jumpman and Mario looked alot alike. This was after Super Mario Bros was made. Lets not forget that Jumpman was a carpenter, not a plumber.
Ya, my point is though, Mario's design at least, came from Donkey Kong. Back on topic, DK64 must be remade in some form, it was one of the best Nintendo 64 games out there.
One more thing and then back on topic. The hardware that Nintendo used did not allow them to make a character with a mouth, so they used a mustache instead, and if the arms were the same color as the shirt, the arms would disappear when Mario or Jumpman moved, so they had to use overalls. And hair wasnt possible to make either, so they used a hat. I really hope that the DK 64 3DS happens, I would probably buy it on day 1!
Actually, you are wrong about the creation of Mario Originally, Nintendo was a playing card company. Among the licenses they held was Popeye the Sailor, which was owned by King Features. In 1981, Nintendo made one of those cheap pocket games starring Popeye, and planned to release a more elaborate one for the arcades. A first-time designer named Shigeru Miyamoto was assigned to the project and began sketching game concepts involving the classic Popeye/Olive Oyl/Bluto threesome. After one of those concepts was approved, Miyamoto found out that King Features had denied Nintendo the rights to bring Popeye to the arcades. The characters were suddenly off limits to Nintendo, but Miyamoto went ahead with the game anyway - keeping the threesome, but arbitrarily replacing Popeye with a plumber, Olive with a princess and Bluto with an ape. Donkey Kong did incredibly well, and the plumber's profession inspired Miyamoto to create the first Mario Bros. game and the rest is history. Yes, "the profession" itself inspired him to make Mario Bros.
