3DS CPU Revealed?
Technical talk among CEOs may have spilt the beans on the chip that will give the 3DS its muscle.
The Nintendo 3DS seems the most capable handheld so far, showcasing visuals that may be impossible even on the PSP or iPhone. The question of what is powering the system has remained unanswered.
During a discussion regarding Marvell’s (no, not the comic book company, that’s one L) fiscal results, CEO Sehat Sutardja mentioned that a “major customer” was ordering their Armada chips to be used with an upcoming gaming platform. All signs point to Nintendo being the customer.
This announcement fans the flames regarding a possible Fall 2010 launch for the 3DS, at least in Japan. Some have claimed that the console would not be released until early 2011, but with the timing of Marvell’s announcement, along with Nintendo’s own release date announcement this September, something is certainly brewing soon.
Of course, there is always the possibility that the Armada chip may be used to power Sony’s top-secret successor to the PSP, but with nothing but conjecture at this point, it seems unlikely that they’ve gone beyond the conceptual stages. The current rumour is that Sony’s next portable system will be an Android powered gaming platform/cellphone hybrid, but nothing is set in stone at this time.
Nintendo has been using the same processors for their DS brand of handhelds for nearly six years now. Whatever CPU they choose for the 3DS, it will no doubt be a massive upgrade. Indeed, some of the 3DS games shown so far seem to even rival the Wii’s admittedly outdated graphics. We can only hope the rumoured Wii successor will feature an upgrade just as significant as the DS to 3DS.

totaly agree will be the best capable probs even better once they inprove the game cartridge as its only 2gb on realease and see it going up to 4 probs

believe and write, that the 3ds graphics are bad and no rival for ps2/psp
god, must be a hard day to wear scarfs and masks and hats just to buy
in secret a 3ds for the sony and microsoft ultra-radikal-fans
my bet, 2 years after 3ds release we will see graphics that overpowers the
actual 3ds metal gear 3 graphics with ease….

No the 3Ds has a picca 200 gpu which is not as powerful as the wii gpu because if u check havoc fx website might be gone now they said they support the wiis very powerful GPGPU yes so the wii can do proccessing commands from the GPGPU as well as the 1.1ghz single core cpu the wii has on wii its the GPGPU thats powerful and the cpu is kept to a mimimun for power consumsion ect but the Armada 600 cpu in the 3DS is way more powerful than ps3/wii/360 fact its quad core and runs at 1.2ghz but the GPU’s in the wii/ps3/360 are way more powerful its the cpu in 3DS thats going to make things possible on games like RE Revelation Capcom say it will be the best looking RE to date

hi there yes matt i agree with that but that dose put it at a real power full console no slow poke like psp psp go dsi ds marvell cpu maker leaked specs and wakia pedia also leaked cpus as well your right the cpu is not even mavell but it is not a 1 cpu 1 core in 3DS here comes 3DS from wakia pedia web site last night 2 1.0 ghz duo core cpus soo you have a toatal of 2.0 ghz quad core thats way faster then my ibook 4G hp ssd netbook 24 inch imac 2 gb flash memory storage
it will eat psp/iphone4/ipad for breakfast AND WITH 3D thats clear as a sunny day, mgs demo was above ps2 and utterly shat on psp, its most likley wii-ish power maybe more in relative performance i.e small screen and a patent that looks like a 3DS patent shows 2x gpus maybe 2x pica200 or a secondery weaker gpu….i still think things are to be shown like rumble and or other scat 3DS can do
i think cross platform gaming true cross platform entertainment/gaming will happen with 3ds/wii2 maybe even hybrid console or at least hybrid cross system gaming
oh and wii has 729mhz custom powerpc not a 1.1ghz stop making scat up
