Black Nintendo 3DS Down to DSi Prices

Today you can pick up a black Nintendo 3DS for the same price as a DSi XL cost this time last year.

3DS prices have reached a new low in the UK. Amazon.co.uk have started selling the Cosmic Black 3DS for under £160. Confusingly the black version is £10 cheaper than the blue. It seems likely that this is a temporary mistake and that prices will soon be matched. The question is; which price will they stick with?

Cosmos black Nintendo 3DS going cheap - Any takers?

The figure of £159.99 is significant because the console is now as cheap as the DSi XL was this time last year. The DSi XL was essentially an upgraded version of a budget console from 2004. It’s quite unexpected that the relatively high spec 3DS should match last-gen pricing just 2 months after launch.

The Wii remained at £179.99 for years. The DSi XL itself has only dropped by £20 since launch, despite being superseded. Yet the 3DS price has dropped by £40 in just two months, or £70 if you count the original pre-order price.

Is this a sign that retailers are struggling to sell 3DS consoles? We already know that Nintendo failed to reach its initial launch target, selling 400,000 fewer units than predicted.

A cheap 3DS is good news for anyone who plans to buy one soon, but such a drop can make for depressing reading to those who splashed out in the last two months.

Most loyal Nintendo fans will tell you that the disappointing range of launch titles are the cause of the sluggish start. However, with Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries and Metal Gear Solid 3 arriving soon, along with the fact that Mario hasn’t made his 3D debut yet, things are likely to pick up in the near future.

One day Adam had a vision, and that vision was in 3D. After a while his eyes started to hurt so he looked away from the vision and started making a website about the 3DS instead of playing it, and so 3DS Buzz was born.

    Do you think the price will go back up, keep falling or stay around this price?

  2. subhas says:

    Awesome?
    It is probably just a mistake. That is a lot of money to lose.

  3. Sam Walker says:

    John Lewis and Currys have got both of them at £157 as well! Amazing to think that I could have saved £30 by waiting a couple of months. Still, I’ve enjoyed having it.

  9. Peter D. says:

    Why are all the European retailers so indecisive about the 3DS’s price? Here in Canada, it’s been a solid $249.99 since launch day.

  10. Cal says:

    Slightly irritating, but if I hadn’t have bought at launch I would have gotten a crap price for my old DSi because of the big crack in the hinge! Thank god for GAME’s fixed prices when it comes to trade-ins … If they based it on condition … Lol … It wasn’t in bad condition, the only thing was the crack … It just appeared, even though I never dropped it and had a cover and everything … >:( Well, I guess now my brother can afford a 3DS, lol! :D

  11. George says:

  19. AbuJaffer says:

    Never got a DS, so I’ve been catching up on DS games. Been playing the absolutely spectacular TWEWY (best RPG ever, IMO), and Pokemon White. In other words, I regret nothing.

  20. Sam Walker says:

    @Peter D.

    It’s because Nintendo didn’t set a retail price like they did in the US and Canada. All the shops are trying to outcompete each other.

  21. Nintendogirl says:

    I got my black 3ds for £150 it was at grainger games :)

    I think its not only the lack of good launch titles but also the lack of advertising! I mean how do you advertise something thats 3D?

  26. 3ds is best says:

    @steffex
    not really it just means you are stupid and have less
