E3 2012: Nintendo Conference Rundown
It’s that time of year! All the latest news out of Nintendo’s E3 Conference is right here.
Nintendo’s E3 Press Conference just happened, and I was watching to bring you the latest news out of the show! To get you in the mood, here’s a picture of Nintendo’s finest at the show itself:
The show started with a rather adorable scene; Shigeru Miyamoto was sat backstage reading his script while a bunch of Pikmin crawl around! A hint of what’s to come? There are also Pikmin in the crowd! Nintendo love the Augmented Reality.
Next up, a translator came out to allow Miyamoto to switch to Japanese. He talked about the Wii U and how they want to change the role of television and it’s relationship with games consoles. Oh, a black Wii U controller!
Pikmin confirmed! Pikmin 3 is coming to Wii U and looks gorgeous. There’s a new type of Pikmin; the Rock Pikmin. Interestingly, it looks like it will use both the Wii U controller and the Wii Motion Plus Controller. The game’s going to feature replays! Pretty cool. Pikmin 3 will be playable on the show floor. If there’s a playable demo, could it be a launch title? No confirmation on that, but it’s possible.
Reggie Fils-Aime & The Wii U
Reggie showed up and the crowd went wild! “It’s all about the games,” Reggie says. That’ll be nice after Microsoft’s groan-fest yesterday. Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, Amazon video are all coming to the Wii U. Sounds like it’s going super-social, too.
Looks like e3.nintendo.com is going to be the way they’ll get E3 news out to the masses, go check it out.
“Asymmetric gameplay” is the big thing for Wii U. Also the rumours are true; two gamepads confirmed! A “guide tour” of the Wii U Gamepad was next. It comes with a stylus; yay! That’s my big worry gone. It’s a real nice looking device; it’s got a camera and microphone in it too. It will be interesting to see how developers make use of them.
There was a bunch more Miiverse stuff during the show too, and it sounds like it will be the Facebook of Nintendo. It will link you with your friends and people you play with from all over the world, as well as reflecting your own tastes and what’s popular worldwide. You can send messages and screenshots. It won’t be available on launch day, but Miiverse is coming to everything: 3DS, PC, phones.
New Super Mario Bros. U
Mario! New Super Mario Bros. U is coming and is going to feature a bunch of social stuff. Know those annoying twitter integrations in some games? This game is built around it. Looked like more New Super Mario Bros, this time with flying squirrel suits and some weird floaty dinosaur that looked like Yoshi and Birdo had a baby. Also, there’s similar Wii U Gamepad integration as Rayman Legends; the Gamepad player will help Mario and friends along their journey.
Wii U’s Third Party Support
The show then transitioned into a segment devoted to third party support. Batman Arkham City is coming to Wii U! After Harley Quinn had some choice words for Reggie, Martin Tremblay came out to talk about the game; “a unique version,” he claimed. Batman: Arkham City: Armored Edition is Wii U exclusive. Basically, it’s the same game with Wii U Gamepad integration. B.A.T. mode will make Batman more powerful, apparently. Batarangs are now controlled with the gyroscope in the Wii U Gamepad. None of this looks like it couldn’t be done with a controller.
Scribblenauts Unlimited is coming to Wii U. The animation looks gorgeous in HD. Also it seems you’ll have a lot more control over what you make: You won’t simply type in words, now you’ll be able to put wheels and mohawks on dogs! The game looked great. There’s multiplayer too.
A ridiculous number of third party games were shown; including Darksiders 2, Mass Effect 3, Tanks! Tanks! Tanks!, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 with Mario’s Mushroom!, Trine 2 Directors Cut, Ninja Gaiden 3, and Alien Colonial Marines.
Wii Fit U & SiNG
Reggie came back out to drop the “My body is ready” line! Glorious man. He then went on to announce Wii Fit U. It’s really cool how they’re bringing the old Wii controllers and peripherals to the new console rather than just abandoning them. Looks like there’s going to be a pedometer peripheral, too.
Sing looked like it will combine Singstar with Dance Central. Kind of cool for that market.
It was then time for some glorious 3DS games! There’s going to be a 3DS show tomorrow, and it will be an hour long at e3.nintendo.com!
There is going to be a new 2D Mario platformer for the 3DS, complete with the tanooki suit! It sounded like there will be some focus on collecting gold coins. It will be out on the 19th of August.
Paper Mario still exists. The gameplay will be focused on collecting stickers and then using them as battle commands in fights. It’s going to be one of those games that launch simultaneously in stores and on the eShop!
Yay! Nintendo didn’t forget about Luigi’s Mansion 2! There’s going to be more mansions, a giant spider, and new ghosts. It also looked to be a bit more strategic. It’ll be out this Christmas season.
A bunch of third party 3DS games got shown: Castlevania, Epic Mickey, Scribblenauts Unlimited, and Kingdom Hearts 3D.
It was then time for Lego City on the Wii U. Looks like it’s going to have you hunting down criminals in an open world city made of Lego. It looked a bit like they tried to get the rights to do a Lego: GTA but couldn’t, though there’s no way I’m going to complain about that concept! Reggie says there’ll be a 3DS version, too.
Ubisoft <3 Nintendo
Ubisoft have been hard at work with Wii U, including Just Dance 4. The player with the Wii U gamepad chooses the dance moves that the professional dancers with excellent choreography then perform!
ZombiU looks fantastic. It has some really cool Gamepad integration including using it to aim at a specific location on screen, such as with a sniper rifle. There will also be a sonar feature that will let you know where the zombies are even when you can’t see them. Zombie Reggie likes french food.
Some of the games Ubisoft have been making for the Wii U are Assassin’s Creed 3, Rabbids Land, Yourshape 2013, Rayman Legends, Sports Connection, and Marvel Avengers.
Nintendo Land was then announced, and it was essentially a virtual Nintendo theme park. It’s a collection of minigames based of Nintendo franchises to show off the Wii U’s unique features; A bit like what Wii Sports was for the Wii. There’s some kind of ninja game where you throw shurikens at ninjas, which was shown in an earlier form last year. There’s going to be some kind of Miiverse integration too.
Luigi’s Ghost Mansion will be a part of it. Maybe that’s where the rumour of Luigi’s Mansion 2 on the Wii U came from. The Gamepad player is the ghost and is given the task of hunting down the four other players. The ghost can see the other players, but they’ll have no idea where he is. Sounds like a horror movie. The players’ only defence is their torches, which will damage the ghost player. When the ghost attacks a player, they faint. It’ll take all three of the other players to revive him with their torches, and if they fail and are all knocked out then the ghost wins! Looks like the torch will be both your weapon and your medkit? This looks like a lot of fun.
Nintendo Land will launch with the Wii U. Probably a pack-in like Wii Sports? There’ll be a look at it on e3.nintendo.com!
And that’s it. No Zelda and Iwata didn’t show up this year. It was a pretty good show though. It looks like the focus for the Wii U will be multiplayer and more social features. Stick around for more in-depth news as it comes in!
