Experience 3DS (Sort of) – Win Mario Kart 3DS
Back by popular demand, here’s a preview of the 3D effect of Nintendo’s new handheld in stereogram format. If it works for you, you could win your first 3DS game!
Sorry, the competition is over. You can see the reveal of the hidden 3D image here.
A few weeks ago, Adam brought you a feature that attempted to convey the effect of the 3DS with the “wiggle” method stereogram. Some of you could see the effect – and some couldn’t.
Here’s another way to experience 3D and if you can identify the character in the picture above, you could win your first 3DS game! Here’s how to do it;
The aim is to trick your eyes into drifting apart slightly. First, relax; try to stare not at the image itself, but focus on an imaginary point in the distance behind the image. The sweet spot should feel as if you’re staring into space. As the image emerges, you might also see double images, or even begin to see bits of the picture without being able to see it; don’t try and focus on the picture until it fully appears. It can also help to start up close with your nose in the centre of the image, then slowly pull your head back over the course of a minute or so.
If you can’t see it, try printing the picture out; it might help not to have view it on a glaring screen. This website also features some great tips on seeing autostereogram images. Alternatively, you might have more joy with our original feature which uses a completely different technique to fake 3D.
I’d also recommend trying the larger image below, first – the effect is more obvious in higher resolution.

An alternative method is to go cross-eyed, rather than letting your eyes diverge. However, instead of seeing the image as it was originally intended, you’ll see a inverted version – a 3D hole where the character should be.
Can you see the 3D effect? And who’s the 3D character in question? If you can work it out, email who you think it is to contact@nintendo3ds.org.uk. On 8 September, we’ll randomly pick a winner from the correct answers and award them a copy of Mario Kart 3DS as soon as it’s available.
Note: Comments are turned off to stop any one giving away the answer. You can discuss it in our brand-new 3DS Forum though, just don’t say the answer or you’ll be in trouble!
Acknowledgment: A special shout out to Ash, who first suggested we use this method.
