Game Gear Lineup Announced For Virtual Console
Sega is digging deep for the 3DS’ digital distribution. Find out which Game Gear titles will first grace the handheld’s Virtual Console.
It’s well known at this point that the 3DS will feature its own Virtual Console for direct downloading of portable games from the past, including classic Gameboy titles like Super Mario Land and Link’s Awakening DX.
And yet, there’s always a certain thrill in playing games from an entirely different console (along with its manufacturer) on a modern Nintendo system. Such is the case with Sega’s latest announcement at this year’s GDC. Not only will Nintendo’s former rival release a host of titles from their cult favorite handheld the Game Gear, but they’ve already got a list of titles ready for release once the 3DS store goes up.
Leading the retro revolution is, of course, Sonic the Hedgehog, with Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble (known as Sonic & Tails 2 in Japan) and Sonic Drift 2. The former is based on the Hedgehog’s classic 2D platformers, while the latter is a Kart racing spin-off that puts Sonic behind a racing car that probably couldn’t match even half of his speed.
Other GG ports of classic Genesis titles include Shinobi and Columns, along with Dragon Crystal (Shirani’s Maze in Japan), a classic dungeon-crawling RPG originally released on the Sega Master System. This lineup of titles is just the first of many releases planned by Sega, although a solid release date as well as pricing have yet to be determined.
As nostalgic as it may be to play these portable 8 bit titles on a modern handheld, we’re still hoping that both Nintendo and Sega will think further ahead the technological timeline to bust out beefier games that the 3DS could easily handle. We still have no confirmation on the possible release of Gameboy Advance titles, and it certainly would be nice for Sega to include both the Saturn and Dreamcast as part of this new downloadable partnership.

Eh, I already have several of these from the Sonic Mega Collection. Im not getting anything from SEGA unless it’s on a home console.
i know i probably won’t bother with these either. they show no interest to me. I’m not saying these are bad, they just don’t look too good besides the sonic ones. :Γ

GameGear is the same as Master Sytem on Wii because they had the same chipset and same games so I wonder fs Master System can be transfred from Wii to GameGear-3DS or Region Lock probaly stopping it, forcing to buy the same games again just for the handheld. Same thing Turbo Graphics 16?
I might look into a few for pure nostalgiac reasons. I owned a gamegear long before I owned a GBA
You know, I haven’t even heard of the game gear before, but it’s good that the 3DS will have a large amount of different retro games for people who are so inclined.
dreamcast download games for 3ds….would be overkill for storage ok there is sd card option but i think dreamcast games needs at leas the power from NGP[psp2] and even that piece is nowhere as strong as a real hd-home console….
