Overview
Kid Icarus: Uprising is a third person action/shooter game and is the third installment in the Kid Icarus series and the first since 1991's Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters on the original Game Boy. Similarly to the previous installments, Medusa and her army are once again attempting to destroy Skyworld, and of course take over the world. Kid Icarus: Uprising was one of the first games to be shown for the Nintendo 3DS and later became a playable demo. This game is developed by Project Sora and published by Nintendo. The game had already started production when the Nintendo 3DS had started its production, in 2010.The basic gameplay follows Pit on his mission to save Skyworld, and involves both ground and aerial-based combat.
The head developer, Masahiro Sakurai, was the head developer of the Super Smash Bros. series and the creator of Kirby. Kid Icarus: Uprising released on March 23, 2012 in North America and Europe. As soon as Kid Icarus: Uprising was finished, Masahiro Sakurai started work on Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, both of which will not likely be released until 2013 or possibly even 2014, seeing that Super Smash Bros. Brawl was announced a little before E3 2005 and released in 2008.
Characters
The game has a very wide array of characters to help or hinder Pit on his adventure. Here are just a sample of them.
- Pit - Our hero and the captain of Palutena's personal guard. Pit is a powerful warrior despite his youthful appearance. Wielding many new weapons and gifts from Palutena, Pit is no longer limited to the bow of his past adventures.
- Palutena - The goddess of light and ruler of Skyworld. Palutena guides Pit through most of his journey, using her powers to help him protect the humans of the surface world from her archnemesis, Medusa, goddess of the Underworld.
- Medusa, Queen of the Underworld - The one-time Queen of the Underworld, exiled by Palutena long ago. Twenty-five years ago, Pit defeated her once and for all...or so it seemed. Now resurrected and thirsty for revenge, Medusa leads an army far more powerful than before.
- Magnus - The mightiest human swordsman of all time. With his massive blade and experience as a mercenary, Magnus is a powerful ally against the Underworld. But this hard exterior masks what seems to be the tragic loss of a child.
- Dark Lord Gaol - A general of the Underworld Army who leads thousands of infernal troops on a violent crusade against the surface world. Gaol's armor emits cursed magical energy that gives the dark lord the ability to float in midair and fire magic missiles.
- Hewdraw - An enormous three-headed flying dragon. Each of Hewdraw's heads has its own personality, causing them to constantly bicker and argue. Lucky for them, the heads can survive if ever separated from their body.

Changes from series
Gameplay is radically different in this iteration of the Kid Icarus series. Whereas the first two games were sidescrolling platformers, Kid Icarus: Uprising is a hybrid between a shooter and a fighter, and takes place in a full 3D environment in air and on ground.
Nintendo has even stated that they weren't sure about putting Kid Icarus' stamp on the game due to it being a radically new direction for the short-lived series, but that they went with it to please older gamers. The game was actually going to be a Starfox game at first.
This is also the first Kid Icarus Game to be released within the past 20 years.
Gameplay
The game is focused primarily on combat, of which there are two types: aerial and ground-based. Each is unique in its own way, and they're detailed below.
Fiend's Cauldron
This fiery pot will come to view at the start of every level. It will let you get hearts (the currency in Kid Icarus: Uprising) based on how difficult you set the level at. The difficulty scale goes from 0.0-9.0(inclusive), with 2.0 being the standard difficulty, anything below that will cost you hearts, anything above that will give you hearts. Also, the higher the difficulty, the rarer weapons you will find on the level. However, if you lose and you have a high difficulty set and choose to continue, you will lose hearts, so it is a bet mechanic. But if you choose to retreat, you may loose part of your Vault acquired during the chapter.
Aerial combat
Aerial combat is described as "A dynamic guided, on-rails, shooter," where you use the touch screen to aim, the Circle Pad to change Pit's placement on the X and Y axis, and the L button for ranged and melee attacks. In air battles, your weapon attributes, such as streangth, spead, accuracy, and range are improved due to the Power of Flight. This can be done also during short times in Land Battles when you ride on Rails made by the gods, these rails can take you up to higher floors on a stage.
Ground combat
Ground combat is described as traditional third person shooter style. You control where Pit walks with the Analog Circle Pad, shoot or slash with the L button, and aim with the touch screen. The dash system is similar to Super Smash Bros. and Kirby.
The game also benefits from a left-handed control scheme, which makes use of the Circle Pad Pro accessory.
Weapons
Weapons play a huge part of Kid Icarus: Uprising, they are used as combat tools. There are nine weapon categories. These are Bows, Palms, Orbitars, Arms, Claws, Cannons, Blades, Staffs, and Clubs. Within these categories are numerous different weapons too. Each have their own strengths and weaknesses. There is also a new element in the game, Weapon Fusion. This allows you to fuse two weapons to create an entirely new weapon. Weapons can also be exchanged through Streetpass and Spotpass via an item called Weapon Gems. You can either purchase the weapon with Hearts (the in-game currency) or grind them up to get more hearts(However, this destroys the weapon). Some weapons will effect your movement speed, for example you will run faster with Orbitars than you would with a Cannon. There is also the effect of tragectory, so some weapons will fire in a straight line, whilst others will arc when being shot, making it possible to shoot enemies behind cover.Claws

Light Fighter - These are fierce warriors fighting for the light team in the sport of the gods, Light vs. Dark. Light Fighters are wearing a protecting armor that is shining white, which is a sign of their elite status. Yet despite being on the Light Team, they may not be the nicest guys.
Dark Fighter - Warriors fighting for the Dark Team in the sport of the gods, Light vs. Dark. Dark fighters wear dark-colored armor that is both light and strong. While they are fierce and super mean in battle, Dark fighters are really sweet, and cool dudes to hang out with.
Free-For-All
Free-For-All mode is for a general, one person for themselves, brawl. There is a timer, and once it ticks zero, the match is over and the player with the most points win. You can obtain points by defeating other players during the match. The value of your weapon determines how much points you will score when you defeat an opponent.
Multiplayer Items
'Throughout every multiplayer map you will find these usable items to aid in your fight against' opponents. Here are some examples:
- Giant Maker - Turns whoever picks it up into a giant, giving them stronger attacks, but they are also easier to hit.
- Atlas Foot - Calls down a gigantic foot that crushes anything that it lands on.
- Eggplant Bomb - Use it to turn an unsuspecting enemy into an eggplant, rendering them unable to attack. So make sure to run away if you get turned into one.
- Centurion Assist - Hovers around you and acts like a body guard, shooting anyone who gets to close with pinpoint accuracy.
- Spike Ball - Spins around you and does damage over time but can be passed on to other players. If they approach near you they get spiked.

There are only 3 pieces per match, and your team must have all 3 pieces in power in order to shoot this weapon. If the opposing player has a piece it can be acquired by defeating them.
- Medusa's Head - A turret like item that has shots that turn enemies to stone. But watch out! If these shots hit you, they'll apply the same effect!

Idol Toss
A feature in Kid Icarus: Uprising that helps you collect idols. To use it, simply place an egg into the gold bowl and slide it down and release to blast the egg into the air revealing the Idol inside. Eggs come in several colors that can increase the chances of getting a new idol and can be obtained with Play Coins or by beating chapters in the game. It costs one Play Coin to buy one egg.
The egg colors are white, green, blue, and red. White being the base percentage that goes down every time you get a new idol, green eggs increase the base percentage by 5%, blue eggs increase the base percentage by 10%, and red eggs increase the base percentage by 20%. The more eggs you put into the gold bowl the better chance you have at getting a new idol.

MORE TO COME SOON!!...
Easter Eggs
Fiends Cauldron
If you repeatedly tap the Fiend's Cauldron before you start a level, it will get annoyed and turn around for a while.
I'm Finished animation
When you lose all your health, hold down on the Circle Pad to see an animation where a Reaper is frightened by your falling hearts.
Menu Selection
In most menus, you can drag and rearrange the items on screen (they go back pretty quickly though).
After fully beating the game you unlock an extra menu in options that allows to turn off dialogue and switch the home menu between Viridi's and Palutena's.
Extra Hades dialogue
After watching the credits don't touch the controls and you will be treated to extra dialogue from Hades.
References to other Nintendo franchises
There are numerous references to other franchises of Nintendo in this game, including Metroid, Dr. Mario, nintendogs, Donkey Kong, Brain Age, Super Smash Bros., Cave Story, among others.
More Dialogue Between Pit and Paulutena
Although offering hearts doesn't give you anything of real value in the game, it does bring Pit and Palutena closer together, which can involve extra dialogue between the two. You can also get more dialogue between the two by using certain weapons in stages.
Tricks
Multiplayer with only CPU Opponents
You can play Light vs. Dark or Free For All without having to have a second 3DS or hooking up to the internet. Just pick multiplayer in near mode, create a room and pick all your preferences, and instead of making you wait until it finds another 3DS to play with you will go ahead and play the stage with just the CPUs.
Lots of Hearts in Multiplayer
Using the above method is a good and easy way to get a lot of hearts aswell. By turning on handicap to 10% and CPU levels at it's lowest you can gain a lot of easy KOs and gain a lot of hearts.
Controls
Perhaps the most controversial and disliked think about the game is the somewhat awkward controls.
Air Battle
- Move Pit using the circle pad and control the reticle with the touch screen. Attack with L (R with the Circle Pad Pro)
- To use a special attack, press the circle in the lower left corner.
Land Battle
- Move Pit using the circle pad and control the camera reticle with the touch screen. Attack with L (R with the Circle Pad Pro.)
- Select powers with the touch screen or the left and right D-pad. Use a power by pushing UP on the D-pad.
- Center the camera with the R button.
- When the reticle is on an enemy, double tap the touch screen to enter first person view.
Alternate controls
- You can fine tune and change the controls to your liking in the options menu.
- For optional lefty controls the Circle Pad Pro can be used.
- Aswell as use for Left-Handed players, Right-Hand players can use the Circle Pad Pro for a little bit more comfortable feel using the LT button to shoot.
Alternate Game references
- Metroid Komaytos have a suprising resemblance to Metroids. Pit states this in the chapter "Chaos Vortex" much to Viridi's dismay. The loading screen also points out the resemblance to the two.
- Game & Watch In the same chapter, enemies are seen disapearing and reapearing. Pit comments that it looks like they're doing Game & Watch impressions.
- Super Smash Bros. During the tutorial Palutena mentions Super Bash Sisters to were Pit corrects her saying it's Super Smash Bros.
- Dr. Mario In the how to videos Paletena explains how to arrange powers. Pit mentions that it is like Dr. Mario.
- Legend of Zelda In the description for the idol 'Fairy Orbitars' it says "Are you tired of pixies telling you to listen?" reffering to Navi.
- Donkey Kong On chapter 19, Pit says that the Chariot Master must have played Donkey Kong.
- Nintendog On chapter 9, Pit says to Twinbellows that they'd rack up some serious Nintendog trainer points-credit together.
- Brain-Age In chapter 22, Viridi says she has a Brain Age of 24.
- Bomberman In chapter 23 part of the stage resemble a Bomberman stage, and the heart also drops bombs similar to the way Bomberman does.
- Kirby Souflees resemble Blopper enemies form Kirby's Dreamland.
