Overview
Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D is an action/adventure game by Konami. Snake Eater 3D follows Naked Snake on his mission to avert nuclear war between the West and the Soviet Union. The early levels of the game are set in the southern jungles of Russia in the mid 1960's during the Cold War era. The combat system is intelligent. Snake is much better at hand to hand combat; however, his ability to defeat an enemy in one blow will depend on his stamina bar and on how well trained the opponent is.This game was released on the March 8, 2012 for Japan and Europe and released on February 21, 2012 for North America.
Plot
The game begins with Naked Snake, a CIA agent sent into the jungles of the USSR on a mission during the Cold War. In this mission, codenamed "Virtuous Mission", Snake is sent to find a Soviet scientist named Sokolov who originally defected to the United States. Sokolov is supposedly being forced to develop a gigantic weapon named the Shagohod. Snake infiltrates the base holding Sokolov, and the two start to make their escape. Snake is confronted by a USSR official named Ocelot and several elite army men. Snake manages to escape and starts to head to the return point with Sokolov. Everything goes well until his mentor, "The Boss" defects to the Soviet Union. Colonel Volgin, a Soviet official who is trying to seize control of the Soviet government, fires an American-made warhead given to him by The Boss. Not only has the Shagohod completed a critical testing phase, but the nuclear warhead that Volgin fired destroys Sokolov's research and leads the Prime Minister of Russia, Khrushchev, to believe the United States is involved with the nuclear attack. Sokolov is recaptured and Snake, beaten by The Boss in hand-to-hand combat, is critically injured. Snake barely survives and is airlifted out.
With the relations between the United States and Russia already stretched to the breaking point by the Cold War, Naked Snake will have to re-enter the USSR on a covert, secret mission codenamed "Snake Eater" to save the world from a possible nuclear war and total turmoil.
Gameplay
Camouflage
Camouflage is a major gameplay element in Metal Gear Solid 3. During his mission, Naked Snake can find and acquire different types of facepaint and camouflage suits to wear. This allows him to blend in with his environment and keep from being detected by his enemies. Camouflage is measured by an in-game element called the "Camo Index". The better the camouflage, the higher the Camo index number (all the way up to 100%). Crouching or lying down will most likely result in an increase in the Camo index. If camouflage and facepaint are chosen well, Snake will be able to avoid being seen by enemies and if he is seen, the enemies' bullets will not be as accurate. If they are chosen badly, Snake will stick out like a sore thumb and enemies will have no trouble finding him and picking him off. Because of this, it's a useful skill to look around for camouflage and to know how to equip the best camo for the current situation. Certain camouflage outfits, like the scientist outfit, let you blend in inside enemy controlled buildings or areas. Kojima stated that because the story behind MGS3 can't change, the game will implement the use of various 3DS features such as streetpass and spotpass.
CQC
In Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, a primary way of defeating the enemy is by using CQC (Close Quarter Combat). If you control Snake so as to sneak up behind an enemy guard, press the "R" button to make Snake grab the enemy, provided you are using a weapon that allows CQC, such as the Mk22 tranquilizer gun or the knife. After Snake has the enemy immobilized in his grasp, there are certain options you can choose from.
- Pressing left on the directional pad will make Snake interrogate the enemy at knife point which is very useful as the enemies often divulge information and tips to success.
- Pressing up on the d-pad will make Snake choke/stun the enemy. Repeatedly pressing up will make the enemy lose consciousness and eventually perish.
- Pressing right on the d-pad will make Snake slit the enemy's throat with a knife, if equipped. This instantly kills the enemy and is best for times where silence is necessary.
- You can change positions (crouch and standing positions only) while Snake is grasping an enemy using CQC.
- You can fire your weapon by holding the "L" button, aiming, and then pressing the "R" button to fire/utilize. As long as you keep holding the "L" button, you will continue grasping the enemy and aiming your weapon.
If you slide the circle pad with the right timing while pressing the "R" button to initiate CQC, Snake will throw the enemy to the ground, usually knocking the enemy out if Snake's stamina bar is full enough.
Weapons
While there is a multitude of weapons and useful items to be found in the game, the most prominent and frequently used weapon (according to the plot and cut scenes) is the Mk22 Tranquilizer Gun.
Some other common in-game weapons to choose from:
- Stun Grenade
- Smoke Grenade
- Chaff Grenade
- Knife
- Shot Gun
- Sniper Rifle
- Scorpion Sub-machine Gun
- American Light Machine Gun
- None (Bare fist)
Items
Along with weapons, there are various items you can use. Some of the items available in the game:
- Night Vision Goggles
- Thermal Vision Goggles
- Mine Detector
- Bug Juice
- Sonar
- Mouse Trap
- Cigar
Changes from series
Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D is a remake of the original Metal Gear Solid 3, but Konami was able to add some new features such as:
- Motion/gyro control balance on risky areas like bridges and tree branches
- Touch screen menu, making all of your equipment and weapons more accessible
- Photo-camo, allowing the player to take a picture of anything and then morph the picture into a new camouflage outfit for Snake to use, whether it be tactical or just for fun
Development
At E3 2010, the game was shown as a demo to show off the power of the Nintendo 3DS. At Nintendo World, Konami announced it would be a remake of the the original game with elements from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, as well as 2 Player co-op. However, the final version of the game does not include 2 Player Co-op. It is confirmed that the first level of the game has been completed for the demo. This game is developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami.
Reception
Reviews
- IGN gave Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D an overall '8.5 out of 10' or '"Great"', saying "Snake Eater is the perfect Metal Gear Solid title" and "The addition of touch screen commands and menus, plus the improvements to the overall control scheme, are certainly welcome" but also "The camera, despite being fully controllable, still gets in the way, and the fact that you really need the 3DS's Circle Pad Pro accessory is a bit ridiculous".
Easter Eggs
Hidden Yoshis
Replacing Kerotans role in the original game, Yoshi figurines appear hidden in various areas for you to find and collect. When you shoot or attack a hidden Yoshi, the figurine makes various sounds like he does in the Mario series.
Nintendo Power
On the desk in Graniny Gorki laboratory is an issue of Nintendo Power Magazine. Although there wasn't a cover story about the game in any Nintendo Power, if the player shoots the magazine it will open and show an actual story from Volume 270 of the magazine.
