Overview
Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions is a collection of six games for the 3DS. Four of them are ports of old games that will only use 3D effects to give the image of looking down into an arcade machine, but two of them (Pac-Man Tilt and Galaga 3D) have been redesigned sepcifically for the 3DS. Also the game includes a short movie about Pacman.
Game Modes
Six game modes are featured in Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions, and they are as follows:
- Pac-Man Tilt 3D
- Pac-Man (original arcade version)
- Galaga 3D
- Galaga (original arcade version)
- Pac-Man Championship Edition
- Galaga Legions
Pac-Man Tilt 3D
Pac-Man's controls on this version will be centered on the 3DS's built in gyroscope; if you tilt the 3DS left, Pac-Man will go left (if he's able to). If you tilt it right, Pac-Man will, too (again, if he's able to), and so on. You need to eat the little pellets and avoid ghosts. However, if you eat a big pellet, you are able to be temporarily invincible and you can eat the ghosts. In the classic game (which is also to be included), there are 255 playable levels.
Galaga 3D
There isn't much known about the Galaga part of the game, except for the fact that it will be a remake of the classic arcade game where you control an aircraft and you need to shoot the incoming enemies. This original is a side-scroller, with enemies coming in different formations, such as a loop or a line, then going to the top of the screen and "stacking" down. However, the 3D remake is said to have a first person perspective so that it uses 3D effects to a greater extent. The 3D effect for this game mode, as well as all other game modes, is said to give a top-down look of looking inside a cabinet. Apparantly, the crosshairs in the new version are to be moved by tilting the device, although this would break the 3D effect, so the circle pad will probably be an alternative.
Pac-Man Championship Edition
Originally released for the Xbox Live Arcade service in 2007, Pac-Man Championship Edition was widely praised as a great update to the original Pac-Man gameplay style. While keeping the same core gameplay as the originals (run around a top view maze whilst eating pellets and avoiding ghosts) the added power-ups and updated visual style made it feel fresh. This is now to be ported to the 3DS in this game collection, but it is unknown whether it will include 3D effects. It is however only the original version to be ported, not the more recent DX version.
Galaga Legions
Galaga Legions was also orignally released for Xbox Live Arcade in 2008. Similarly, it was praised as the definitive version of its series, however not quite as highly as PM-CE. It is a top-down shooter.
Release
On the April 12th, Nintendo of America confirmed in their spring/summer 2011 games line up that Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions is to be released in the USA on the 7th June 2011. In Europe it was released sometime in August 2011.
