Overview

A screenshot from the game
Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time was originally released for the Nintendo Wii in late 2010, with the 3DS version, Rabbids Travel in Time 3D, being released in March 23, March 31, and April 10, 2011, for Japan, Europe, and North America, respectively. The 3DS version is vastly different from the Wii edition, being in essence a platformer rather than a mini-game compilation.

Story

The Rabbids are messing up everything in a museum they managed to wander to one day. The crazy rabbit-like-rabbids have found a time machine that resembles a washing machine in the museum, using it to travel to different time periods in the past and future. They are messing everything up in the past as they are chased by dinosaurs and running away from lava. What are they going to do next?

Gameplay

A screenshot from the game
Rabbids: Travel In Time is a 2D sidescrolling platformer with 3D environments, and contains 4 different time periods, with 60 maps. In the levels, the player has to run, jump, defeat enemies, and collect rubber-duckies, the Rabbids versions of game coins. There are also customisation options, allowing the player to customise Rabbids with over 40 historical costumes. In each stage, the player's Rabbid can take 4 hits before they perish, and can replenish their health by collecting, in true Rabbids toilet humour style, rolls of toilet paper. Each level has a boss, being another Rabbid dressed in different costumes.

During levels, the player can find Rubber Duckies, which are used similarly to coins in that they can be used as currency to purchase different costumes for the Rabbis to wear. Collecting enough Rubber Duckies will also result in the player unlocking extra levels that pit the player against the clock, with the objective being to collect as many Rubber Duckies as possible. Eleven spheres are also scattered around the 60 levels the player can complete. Each orb unlocks a modified version of the level the orb was found on, and a certain amount of spheres are needed to advance to later levels.

Modes

Rabbids 3D has 3 different game modes:

  • Story Mode - This game mode features the Rabbids trying to get through stages in the 4 different time eras.
  • Time Attack - This game mode involves trying to complete a level against the clock.
  • Challenge Mode - This mode challenges the player to complete a stage perfectly, by collecting every item, smashing every block, defeating every enemy and taking no damage.

Reception

Rabbids 3D received a score of 27/40 in a review by Japanese magazine Famitsu. This is one of the lowest scores Famitsu have given to a 3DS game so far.

Nintendolife gave it a score of 6/10, praising the game's bright visuals, accessibility, and amount of content, but criticizing its disappointing and repetitive level design, and low difficulty level. Official Nintendo Magazine gave the game 70%, commenting that although the platforming was basic, there was a good spread of difficulty provided by the time trial and challenge mode, but criticized the way the game didn't mark each task as complete. IGN gave the game a score of 4.5/10, or "bad" score, stating that the gameplay story is unoriginal and bland, and the story is poorly explained and almost nonexistent. Metacritic, an online review compiler, has given Rabbids Travel In Time 3D an aggregate score of 56/100.

Release

Rabbids: Travel In Time was released one week after the 3DS console in Europe, on 31st March 2011, and in North America on 10th April 2011, making it the first game in the Rabbids series to be released on the Nintendo 3DS. Rabbids: Travel In Time 3D was also the first game in the 2-D platforming genre to be released on the 3DS platform, with both the European and North American versions being released within the "launch window" of games for the 3DS, being between the release of the 3DS, and E3 2011 in the second week of June of 2011.
