Overview

The Mercenaries is a minigame that has been part of Resident Evil games for some time. Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is basically an expanded version of the popular minigame unlocked in Resident Evil 4 and 5. T his handheld version boasts the same stages and characters that were in the Resident Evil 4 and 5 modes. There will also be some new modes and hidden characters. The game can be played in local or online co-op mode.

Gameplay

Rebecca Chambers
The game is a score-based challenge in which the player tries to kill as many enemies as he or she can before time is up. Multiple kills increase the score. There are also a number of bosses wandering around the stages which yield a higher number of points when killed. Time can be extended by shooting crystals and using melee attacks against enemies, so strategy can be an important factor. New to Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is the fact that players can reload and fire weapons straight on while moving. Weapons will also be able to be switched on-the-fly now, using the 3DS's bottom touch screen. If the player wants to aim, though, aiming must be done from a stationary standpoint. Some automatic guns have red lasers to indicate where bullets will go; red lasers and other gun upgrades may be available to the game's Skill Slot feature in the game.

Thirty missions will be able to the player in single-player mode. The game will also feature new stages as well as remastered stages. New music and themes will also be available in Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. Online multiplayer is also featured in the game, and is cooperative with players fighting against zombies on the same map. Certain combos can only be achieved when playing in cooperative mode with two players.

A skill slot feature will also be available to help upgrade characters. Three skill slots will be available, and skills can be chosen from a range of 30 skills, which include decreasing reload times and increasing health. Skills will be unlockable throughout the game, and may be necessary in later stages of the game to increase strategy.

Characters

Different characters do not just offer a bit of a change; they bring with themselves different weapons, melee moves, and attributes; so playing as different characters may take a bit of getting used to. It may also mean that players can develop favourite characters. Eight characters are confirmed to be available in the game.

The following characters have been confirmed to be in the game:

  • Chris Redfield
  • Jill Valentine
  • Barry Burton
  • Rebecca Chambers
  • Albert Wesker
  • Claire Redfield
  • Hunk
  • Jack Krauser

Rewards

Barry Burton
Like Super Street Fighter IV, the last Capcom game release on the 3DS, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D will also feature medals, which are unlocked in similar methods as achievements. A multiplayer skill progression system will also be in the game. This skill system will probably be used when matching random players in a possible competitive game mode, but it might also serve as the player's "rank" that will be publicly displayed for others to see the skill lever of the player.

Release

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D will be released in Europe on the 17th June, 2011. It will be released in North America on the 28th of June and in Japan on the 2nd of June and in Australia on the June 30th 2011.

Demo

A demo of Resident Evil Revelations, the next Resident Evil game for the 3DS, which is the next Resident evil with a true single-player storyline, is confirmed to be available with Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. This would be currently the only way to experience gameplay of Resident Evil: Revelations, expected to be released in 2012.
