Overview
At E3 2011, two new Super Smash Bros. titles and successors to Super Smash Bros. Brawl were announced and will be developed for both Nintendo 3DS and the upcoming Wii U, and that they will communicate with each other in some way. However, development had not started at the time. Masahiro Sakurai, the director of the game, said he wanted to finish working on Kid Icarus: Uprising first before he moved onto these two titles. Later, there was a web page that was leaked on the game that was very difficult to read; on it was a completely blue version of the Super Smash Bros. logo with the word "Universe under it. Later, that webpage was proven to be fake. No further information has been given since. In Super Smash Bros. games, there are characters from many Nintendo and close-to-Nintendo franchises (i.e. SEGA) all thrown into one game. These characters must fight against one another to win the brawl. Recently, Masahiro Sakurai has stated that they have begun production of the games, though no further information has been released.
However, one thing they mentioned at E3 2011 is that the Nintendo 3DS game will be more of a customizable game where you can customize your characters in some way, and then you can take your customized characters to fight on it's Wii U counterpart. However, no other details have been announced for this yet.
Masahiro Sakurai has also stated in recent interviews he doesn't want to just add more characters and stages, he wants to come up with new and innovative ideas for the game, which should not come as any surprise looking at the original Kid Icarus and the recent Kid Icarus Uprising(Which Sakurai also worked on.) and seeing how much new ideas were put into Uprising.
Gameplay
No information has been given about gameplay, however it will likely have gameplay similar to previous Super Smash Bros. titles. In these games, you get to choose a Nintendo character such as Mario, Link, or Pikachu and stage to fight on (such as a stage inspired by the original Super Mario Bros.), and you must defeat your opponent(s) by hitting them off the screen. Each character has his or her own attacks and each stage has their own gimmicks. It is very likely to use the Nintendo 3DS's online features like Kid Icarus: Uprising and Mario Kart 7 have.
Plot
Like in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, we can assume that there will be a story mode, of who's name has not been thrown on the table yet. Further details have not been discovered.
Development
Masahiro Sakurai has confirmed that development as started on the game, as he had said that he would only work on it once Kid Icarus: Uprising was released.
