Overview

A Sonic game for the 3DS was originally announced via the big list of 73 3DS games shortly after E3. Sonic Generations is an action, adventure, platformer game that was developed by Dimps and published by Sega.

In a 2010 interview with Takashi Iizuka, on what he thought about the 3DS, he talked about the Sonic 3DS game saying:

"At Sonic Team, we’re already studying the Nintendo 3DS. We’re very interested in the platform. We think the depth of 3D could really help the sense of speed, especially when you’re playing Sonic from behind-the-back perspective."

In early May, Sonic Generations (a 20th anniversary Sonic game scheduled to be released in 2011 on XBox and PS3) appeared on Gamestop's list of upcoming 3DS games. Sonic Generations was later confirmed for the 3DS on 26th May 2011 and will have levels including the Casino Night zone from Sonic The Hedgehog 2. StreetPass and PlayCoins have been confirmed, as well as a new battle like multiplayer.

Sonic Generations is a 2D plaformer, which lets you play stages as both Classic and Modern Sonic in Stages from all through out Sonic's history. It also lets you face of against familar enemies and bosses such as Big Arm from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Bio-Lizard from Sonic Adventure 2.

Gameplay

You go through past stages first with Classic Sonic then as Modern Sonic. Your goal is to reach the end of each stage without dying. Classic and Modern Sonic's gameplay has some differences. Classic gameplay, plays like Sonic's Genesis games, where you spin jump on enemies to hurt them and spin dash to zoom right through groups of badniks. Modern plays similar to Sonic Rush, where as you have a boost meter that you can fill by defeating enemies and collecting rings to be able to boost gaining a lot of speed and being able to destroy enemies by just dashing through them. You also can homing attack enemies as Modern Sonic and later on in the story as Classic Sonic.

Story

Spoiler Alert!

The following section contains major plot points, continue reading at risk at spoiling the entire story.

As Classic Sonic is running through Green Hill Zone a mysterious force sucks him up. Then while Modern Sonic is celebrating his birthday with his buddy Tails the mysterious force comes and sucks up them aswell. After going through several stages from past adventures Classic and Modern Sonic meet up and decide to team up to take out this mysterious force that is attempting to mess with time.

After restoring all the levels, facing off against old rivals and enemies, and collecting the 7 Chaos Emeralds, the Sonics go to fight the thing that has been messing with their worlds time, which is revealed to be the Time Eater a monster created by both Classic and Modern Eggman to finally get rid of both Sonics and be able to take over time. Both Sonics go Super and destroy The Time Eater and all hope for both Eggmans to take over the world.

After defeating the Time Eater, both Sonics and Tails return to the place were Sonic was celebrating his birthday and Modern Sonic starts eating his birthday chilli dog. However, Classic Tails realizes that the vortex to the past was closing, so he and Classic Sonic had to go back. Just before leaving, Classic Sonic shows Modern that he's learning the Boost as well. After telling him to have a great future, Modern Sonic says goodbye to Classic Sonic and he, along with Classic Tails, return to the past.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack for Sonic Generations is comprised of different themes heard throughout the series' respected history.

All the game's stage themes comprise of remixes of the original stage's theme for both Classic and Modern Sonic. The music was remixed by Jun Senoue and Tatsuya Kozaki, with guest remixes done by Tomoya Ohtani, Kenichi Tokoi and Naofumi Hataya (who remixed the classic versions of the Genesis stage themes), among others.

You also unlock music from past games you can listen to by beating missions. You can listen to all this music in the collection, and you can even close your 3DS and plug in headphones and listen to it, making it act like an MP3 player. This is perfect to listen to music while earning Play Coins walking.

Story Errors

Their are a few errors in the games overall story involving mainly Stages and Bosses.

Radical Highway

Sonic was never playable on Radical Highway in Sonic Adventure 2, this was Shadow's stage in the game.

Sonic vs. Bio-Lizard

Sonic never battled The Bio-Lizard in Sonic Adventure 2, it was Shadow's boss fight. Although Sonic did sorta fight the Bio-Lizard in The Final Hazard fight, but the fight in Sonic Generations is based on Shadow's boss fight with Bio-Lizard and not the Final Hazard.

Metal Sonic in Casino Night

Metal Sonic has never appeared in Casino Night Zone, and as such him and Classic Sonic have never fought there.

Sonic vs. Shadow in Radical Highway

Although Shadow has appeared in Radical Highway, he never did fight Sonic there. But this is the place where the two meet for the first time.

Silver in Tropical Resort

Silver has never appeared in Tropical Resort stage, and as such he has never fought Sonic there. Although he does appear in the stage Sweet Mountain in Sonic Colors DS, but again Sonic and him do not fight there.

Easter Eggs

NiGHTS Hotel

While going through Radical Highway, if you look in the background you can see a hotel with NiGHT's head on it.

Got Rings?

In Radical Highway there is a giant blimp that you have to bounce off of to advance through the stage. It says on it's side Got Rings? which is a parody of the famous phrase Got Milk?

Time Eater Likes to Advertise

Also in Radical Highway there is a poster that says Time Eater with a picture of a clock, foreshadowing the final boss of the game.
