Overview
Super Mario 3D Land, is a 3D platforming game from the Super Mario franchise, and is for the Nintendo 3DS. It's closely based on side-scrolling Super Mario games such as Super Mario Bros. 3, but it is a 3D platformer in the vein of games like Super Mario 64. As noted by Reggie Fils-Aime, president and CEO of Nintendo of America, at E3 2011, this game marks the first time a 3D Mario platformer has been built from the ground up for a handheld system (Super Mario 64 DS was for a handheld system, however, it was not built from the ground up, it was a remake).
The was created by the same development team that worked on the Super Mario Galaxy games and Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, currently part of Nintendo EAD Tokyo. As it is a new installment in the main Mario series, Super Mario 3D Land follows Super Mario Galaxy 2 in this respect.
This game was released in Japan on November 3nd 2011, North America on the 13th November 2011. Europe the 18th November 2011 and in Austrailia on the 24th November 2011.
Gameplay
The levels of Super Mario 3D Land are much more straight forward and one way than most 3D titles, more along the lines of the side-scrolling games. Levels have a time limit and even feature flagpoles at the end like most of the 2D Mario instead of Power Stars, as the level goals. Super Mario 3D Land features 8 worlds at first, but when you finish the worlds, there are 8 more. In these worlds some are the levels are new, some of them are harder versions of past levels.
While giving examples of how the Nintendo 3DS enhances gameplay, Shigeru Miyamoto has said that hitting blocks from underneath in 3D Mario games would be easier with stereoscopic 3D. Blocks will be more prevalent in the title, unlike past 3D games, where blocks were more few and far between. Star Coins that have a similar design to the Comet Medals from Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be found in each level, with collecting all three being part of the level's challenge, like in the New Super Mario Bros. games.
Checkpoint Flags and green and blue timers can be picked up to give the player more time to complete the level, the latter a mechanic only seen previously in Super Mario Galaxy 2's Speedy Comet missions. Mario himself returns with some of his trademark 3D abilities, such as the Wall Jump, Long Jump, and Ground Pound, and is now capable of performing a somersault, which is done by crouching while moving. Because the Long Jump is now performed through a somersault, it includes a front flip during the jump, but is functionally identical. However, the Triple Jump seen in all Super Mario games since Super Mario 64 is not part of Mario's move arsenal in this game.
Mario's health system is now based on the side-scrolling titles rather than being a numbered meter: one hit shrinks Mario to a smaller size and removes his cap, while power-ups give him an extra health point. These power-ups include the Super Mushroom which turns small Mario into normal Mario, the Fire Flower which allows Mario to shoot fireballs, the Star which makes Mario invincible, and the Super Leaf which turns Mario into Tanooki Mario allowing him to hover for a short time and attack with his tail. The Super Leaf has not been seen since Super Mario Bros. 3. Notably, the Fire Flower, unlike its previous 3D appearances in Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel, Super Mario Galaxy 2, no longer has a time limit imposed on it and is retained until Mario is hit, as in the side-scrolling games. Luigi is also playable in this game after you complete the first world in the second set of 8 worlds. Luigi can jump higher than Mario, but he slides around, which makes stopping before a bottomless pit a bit harder.
Changes from the series
- Mario has returned to the three-hit health system from sidescrolling Super Mario games as opposed to the health meter from all previous 3D Super Mario games.
- The power-ups no longer have a time limit to be used and instead are lost when Mario gets hit by an enemy.
- This game has been changed a lot so that it takes advantage of the 3D effect, so that the user can see depth, unlike the classic side-scrolling series.
- Many side-scrolling-game elements are included withing the game such as the flag at the end of a level and the extensive use of different kinds of "blocks". This, unfortunately hints that there will be no 3DS side-scrolling game, and this game will take its place.
- This game also includes a The Legend of Zelda homage (World 5-2), but unfortunately does not include any The Legend of Zelda enemies nor music.
- The game displays the fastest time you have done the level in. This allows players to do speed runs.
- The game includes many more worlds than previous entries (16 worlds vs. 8 worlds).
- This game includes extensive use of the Super Leaf, unlike any other game of its kind.

Enemies & Obstacles
- Goombas - Most common enemy. They usually follow Mario (or Luigi), if they touch you, you will get hurt. Take care of them by simply jumping on them. Also, sometimes they will join forces and will all pile up in a giant stack, which makes you look small. But don't be scared, by doing a Ground-Pound on top of the stack you can actually wipe them all out at once.
- Tanooki Goombas - These Goombas have acquired a Super leaf and have a Tanooki Tail. They will attack you by swiping their tails, so make sure you get out of the way when you see one spin their tail! Eliminate them by jumping on them, ground-pounding them, swinging your Tanooki Tail, throwing a fireball, throwing a boomerang, or running through them while you're invincible.
- Paragoombas - This is a Goomba with wings, they are harder to reach but can be defeated with a simple jump on their heads, among other methods.
- Biddybuds - They are not particularly aggressive, but it doesn't mean they are not dangerous. They usually appear in groups, and around circling platforms or marching in formation. Jump on their heads to defeat them or use another "killing" method. If you jump on all their heads without touching the ground, you will get a 1-Up.
- Winged Biddybuds - They follow predetermined paths as they patrol the skies, they fly around so they are hard to defeat. A simple jump on their heads will take them down. Just like the regular Biddybuds, if you jump on them all without touching the ground you'll earn yourself a 1-Up.
- Koopa Troopas - When you jump on a Koopa Troopa, it hides in its shell. Once this happens, you can kick the shell into nearby enemies. Make sure to position yourself so that the shell is between you and your enemy for a perfect strike.
- Hammer Bros - They look much like Koopa Troopas, but this jump around in your path and trow hammers at you. Make sure to dodge its attack and quickly jump on its head to defeat it.
- Boomerang Bros - They also resemble Koopa Troopas, but this usually trows boomerangs that go back to them, so make sure to also dodge its attack on the way back.
- Stingbies - They are extremely territorial and will try to sting you if you get near its territory. Defeat it by Jumping on its head.
- Red Piranha Plants - Plant-like enemies that usually appear coming out of warp pipes, but can sometimes be seen on the ground. They cannot move around, however, when Mario or Luigi gets near one they try to bite the brother. Eliminate them by either jumping on them, ground-pounding them, swinging your Tanooki Tail, throwing a fireball, throwing a boomerang, or running through them while you're invincible.
- Inky Piranha Plants - Once they see you, they spit flying ink balls at the top screen. The ink will make it hard to see where you are going. Defeat it before it trows its ink, jump on their heads to do so. (The ink can be removed quickly by just blowing in the Mic on the 3Ds instead of waiting for it to vanish.
- Fire Piranha Plants - They are red Piranha Plants with orange dots, they will begin to spit fireballs as soon as they see you. Dodge its fireball attack and take them down with a jump on its head, trowing a Fireball, Boomerang, or Tail Whip Power-Up attack. Also if you have a White Tanooki or a Super Star.
- Cheep-Cheeps - Common in underwater levels. Defeat them underwater by trowing a fire balls or by doing a Tail Whip. They can also jump out of the water as you travel on a surface (Bridges). Defeat it by stepping on its head.
- Bloopers - These are common aquatic enemies, they are more aggressive than Cheep Cheeps. They can be hard to dodge. Use an underwater Ground-Pound to take them out.
- Porcupuffers - They are not aggressive, but their size makes it hard to pass by. Defeat it with a fireball attack or with a whip of your Tanooki tail. On surface you can use the Boomerang to defeat it too.
- Spike Eels - Spike Eels are big, durable, and always ready for a meal. These gigantic enemies are spread throughout many underwater levels, waiting for a tasty snack. Luckily, they are easy to spot. When you approach it, it comes out of its hiding spot half way ready to attack, goes back in and repeats the process. Use a Power-Up attack to defeat it (several attacks to be accurate) also as you attack it, they will back up into their hiding spots. Usually, is better to swim pass them.
- Thwomps - They are immune to all standard attacks, so don't bother trying to harm them (unless you are invincible or turn into Statue Mario over its heads). When you approach a sleeping Thwomp its eyes open and jump to do a ground pound. In between its jumps you have enough time to pass right through it. (Usually found in the Browser Castles)
- Tail Whwomps - These are like normal Thwomps, but they are more mobile than normal Thowmps. These Tail Thwomps have a tail that allows them to float a little as they fall to the ground on their jumps.
- Wallops - Despite their size, Wallops are incredible nimble creatures. As you approach them, they block your path by mirroring each of your moves. Jump to make it jump, and as it does so, run fast pass it to keep going. (can be defeated the same a Thwomps)
- Draglets - Draglets may not be the fastest-moving enemies, but the fireballs they spit often make them very dangerous. As you approach one of these creatures, they take a deep breath and trow a fire ball. Jump on their heads to to defeat them.
- Dry Bones - These enemies may see fragile, but Dry Bones are one of the games's most resilient creatures. When you jump on Dry Bones, it crumbles to pieces. Unfortunately it doesn't end here, after a short moment it regenerates and its back to fight. You can repeat the moment as long as you want, but the result will always be the same. Unless, you have a Super Star or a White Tanooki power- Up on you.
- Magikoopas - Magikoopas are like little wizards that can be dangerous, they usually appear in plain air. They will conjure a power to attack you, they will lance it at you so be careful. If you manage to dodge its move, quickly jump on its head to defeat it. After they attack they are completely vulnerable for a short time.
- Lava Bubbles - Lava Bubbles are living fireballs that can be found in most Bowser's castles. These creatures can't be destroyed, so the best thing to do is to move pass it as quickly as you can. They are not really aggressive, but can show out when you least expect it.
- Magmaarghs - Magmaarghs are large lava-dwelling monsters. After it emerges out of the lava, it moves in a straight line passing through any obstacle in its path. They are immune to all attacks, and so they are really easy to avoid. So the best thing to do is to wait until it passes by, then quickly continue with your way.
- Monty Moles - These sneaky little critters are usually found in underground levels. Monty Moles burrow out of the sand only to spring up when you approach. After they come out, they usually follow an specific path. They will usually appear in groups, you can either move aside and let it pass you, or jump on its head to defeat it.
- Morty Moles - They are found in areas underground, they don't react to your presence, but can still hurt you. To defeat it jump on its head 2 time. When you don't have enough space to jump like in tunnels, use a Power-Up attack to defeat it or find a way around it.
- Rocky Wrenches - Are commonly found in airships. They show themselves long enough out of Pipes to trow Hammers at you. Defeat it by steeping on it right when its out of the Pipe. In some Pipes where they are hidden can be used, and lead to secret areas.
- Bullet Bills - Once fired they travel in a Straight line, jump on it to defeat it, stay out of its path or use a Tanooki tail Spin to make it change the way it travels.
- Banzai Bills - Much larger than Bullet Bills, the only way to defeat it is to jump on top of it. Unfortunatelly, it can be hard because its bigger (Higher) than you can jump.
- Tanooki Tailed Bullet Bills - Every so often you will spot them. They do Tail Whips so be careful. Defeat it by stepping on top of it.
- Bob-ombs - They are small and will turn red as they follow you. When they turn red its a signal that they will explode. So use a projectile (Fireball, Boomerang, etc) for a quick explode. Just get away from it until it explodes to avoid damage.
- Fuzzies - They are usually found in tightropes or special tracks. They will follow a pattern so make sure to pass by them without touching them or you will receive damage. Find a way around them because they are immune to your attacks unless you are immune with a star or White Tanooki Power-Up. Also if you see one, it means that there would be lots of them together.
- Sandmaarghs - Sandmaars are crocodile looking, they hide under the sand waiting for Mario to approach. Once it see you above him, it follow you, you can notice by the shadow on the sand. As fast as the shadow disappears the Sandmaargh emerges out trying to bite you. when that happens jump away to dodge it, then quickly jump back on its head to defeat it.
- Pokeys - They look like sand a snowman with spines, They are not usually aggressive but are always blocking your path. DON'T TOUCH IT IN ANYWAY, instead use a Power-Up that inflicts damage to defeat it (Fireballs, Boomerangs, Tanooki Tail Whip.
- Spinies - Their spiky shell makes it hard to kill it, DONT STEP ON IT! Instead use a Fireball, Tail Whip or a Boomerang attack. Also if you have the Statue Leaf power, you can turn into the statue on top of them and it wont damage.
- Flophoppers - When you face Flophoppers, you may notice that one part of its body has spines and another a soft belly. This creature moves flipping end over end. The best way to defeat it is to jump on it when its unprotected side is upright. That way you will avoid damage.
- Prongos - Prongos are protected by heavy armor, so there is no sense in attacking it right away. Wait for it to make its first move, when it does so, it jumps in the air and dives towards you. Move out of the way, and it will land with its head down leaving its feet unprotected, then quickly jump on its feet to defeat it. They can reflect almost all the Power-Up attacks (fireballs, Boomerangs), so there is no way of defeating it with them. Also you can use a Tanooki Tail whip, which make it fall over leaving its feet unprotected, then you can either jump on top of it or do another Tanooki Tail Whip to finish it once and for all.
- Blokkabloks - These are snake shape blocks which are all together to form a monster, they usually give you a power up as you crush through its blocks. It alternates between floating in mid air or sliding on the ground. On the top of it, it has spines which will hurt you, instead attack from the bottom, jump to crush its blocks. Once all the blocks are crushed you will defeat it.
- Fake Blocks - Fake blocks blend right in the environment, waiting for a chance to pounce. When it sees you approaching it blinks its eyes and springs into action. Stay focus on it, then once you dodge an attack, jump on top of it and perform a Ground Pound.
- Chain Chomps - These chain creatures are fast, though and furious. When it sees you it lunges at you with speed, if you manage to avoid its attack maybe its because its chained. =0 ! There is no way to defeat it unless you are immune with a Super Star or white Tanooki Power-Up! If you are not lucky enough to have one, wait for it to attack, dodge then quickly get out of its way. They are usually in a level to protect important objects.
- Boos - These enemies only approach at you when your back is turned. They are immune to all standard attacks, unless you have a super star in power of a White Tanooki. If hit by a Power-Up attack they will temporally disappear.
- Tail Boos - They are more aggressive than normal Boos, when your back is turned around they will do a Tail Whip and hurt you. They can be defeated the same as normal Boos.
- Big Boos - They behave exactly like the normal Boos, but are immune to Power-Up attacks.
- Peepa - They are not aggressive, they appear in large groups. They also temporaly vanish when hit with a Fire Ball, Boomerang, or a Tail Whip.
- Coin Coffers - They are not easy to find, but its great to track them down. When you find its hiding spot, they try to flee. Jump on its head five times to defeat it. If you jump on their heads five without touching the ground, you will earn an extra life. As you jump on it, they drop coins. Sometimes a ground pound will take them fully out.
Done... PitGoku, also nintendude1229 helped in a couple so be sure to thank him

Transformations and Power Ups
Mario's Transformations
- Small Mario - (with hat if you have maximum lives) - Mario's weakest form. If you get hit as Small Mario, you lose a life. Unfortunately, in this weakened form you cannot crush brick blocks, but you can reach areas where you will normally have to crouch with Super Mario.
- Super Mario - (without hat if you have maximum lives) Allows Mario to take one hit before changing back to Small Mario. In this form, Mario can smash brick blocks, something that Small Mario cannot do. Can change forms with Power-Ups.
- Fire Mario - When Mario collects a Fire Flower it allows to shoot fireballs. These will attack his enemies, but cannot break through blocks. The bouncing fire balls against walls etc can be helpful, so make sure to have a strategy.
- Tanooki Mario - When Mario collects a Super leaf he turns into Tanooki Mario, power-up that has not been seen since Super Mario Bros. 3. With its useful tail, he then can perform gravity-defying flutter to reach areas. Mario can also do a spin attack using the tail of this power-up to attack enemies. Also, the tail can be used to smash blocks on the ground that can normally only be smashed using a somersault or a ground-pound. After completion of the game, there is a new variation of the power-up that allows Mario to turn into Statue Mario. Fun fact: the Tanooki power-up is actually based on a mythical Japanese creature.
- Invincible Mario - When Mario collects a Star it will grant him the power of invinciblity for a short period of time. In this state, all enemies that Mario touches will instantly perish, as will some obstacles in his path.
- Boomarang Mario - When Mario collects a Boomerang Flower, it allows Mario to throw boomerangs at his enemies, in addition the boomerang goes back to Mario hitting all enemies on the way back too! The boomerang can also be thrown at items like coins and Star Coins to collect them.
- White Tanooki - When you have died at least a number of 5 times on a single level, you will be granted a Assist Block with a White Super Leaf. This is the same as Tanooki Mario, except with ever-lasting invincibility added on to it. Any enemy will be killed on contact.
- Statue Mario - When you beat the game, you will unlock the Special levels. In these levels, instead of the Super Leaf there is the Statue Leaf. It looks like Tanooki Mario with a scarf except you can turn into a statue. Use it to kill enemies by turning into a statue on top of them, if so you will land on them and will kill them. Also some enemies like Goombas will stop following you if you turn into a statue.
- Propeller Box - Acquire this item by jumping under it. it can be used to fly above the platform you are on to go into higher areas. If Mario suffers damage he will go back to Mario. Some levels use this item through the whole level.
- ? Box - This looks like a Question Block but it's actually a box that you can wear by jumping under it. As you wear it you will earn coins, if you sprint the coins will be earned faster.
- P-Wing - After you haved died on a level 10 times, another Assist Block will appear, this time with a P-Wing. After you grab a P-Wing, it will instantly warp you to the end of the level that you activated it. The P-Wing can also be found in Mystery Boxes, though they are extremely rare.

- Invincibility Leaf - Turns Mario into Invincible Tanooki Mario, appears after a player fails a level five times.
- P-Wing - Transports Mario to the end of the level. Appears after a level is failed 10 times. This power-up can also be found in some Mystery Boxes, though it is extremely rare.

Wireless
StreetPass can be used in this game for various things. The first thing that you can do is exchange Mystery Boxes with players, allowing you to get 1-Up Mushrooms and Star Coins with another player. The second things is that you can get items in a Mushroom House from the other player. The more times you StreetPass with that player, the more powerful and plentiful they'll become.
Logo
The game's logo was a topic of much discussion after its initial unveiling in March, 2011, as it appeared to have a tail very reminiscent of the one found behind the "3" in the logo of Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES. This tail was part of a silhouette of the Tanooki Suit, leading fans to believe that the Tanooki Suit will return and make its 3D debut in this game.
Satoru Iwata noted at the game's unveiling that the logo was only temporary, but that the secret behind the tail would be revealed at E3 2011. Shigeru Miyamoto said that "the logo indicated what you think it will." This hinted that the tanooki suit might be available in Super Mario 3D Land.At E3 2011, it was confirmed that Super Mario will feature the Tanooki Suit. The suit will allow Mario to use his tail to hover, perform floating jumps, or attack.
The final logo taking into account the final name for the game was released shortly after E3.
Development
Super Mario 3D Land was first mentioned in an "Iwata Asks" interview with Shigeru Miyamoto in October 2010, where he confirmed that a brand-new Super Mario Bros. game for the Nintendo 3DS was already in development at the time, but currently had not been given a proper title. It was currently known as its tentative title, Super Mario. In November 2010, Shigeru Miyamoto announced that both 2D world (side-scrolling) and 3D world Mario games are in the works for the 3DS.
Four screenshots were first available on March 2, 2011, and the game was officially announced during the Game Developers Conference, under the name Super Mario. The logo had a Raccoon Tail on the "O" letter at that time similar to that of Super Mario Bros. 3 with Raccoon Mario's shadow behind the "3" number. Available screenshots of Super Mario revealed that the game is a 3D platformer and the game is stated to be developed by Nintendo EAD Tokyo's same team which had previously developed Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel, as shown how a Goomba runs after Small Mario. It even contained such features from the 2D Mario side-scrolling games. Satoru Iwata stated that a more official announcement will be shown at E3 2011 on June 7. According to Iwata, "it will be a game that will come with the kind of surprises and fun that only the 3DS can offer."
In a later interview, Shigeru Miyamoto described the title as being a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 64, with a little bit of New Super Mario Bros and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
He mentioned there will be an option for a fixed camera system, very similar to the one in Super Mario 64, to demonstrate depth and the 3DS's 3D. He added, however, that it was tough to describe it, before mentioning that, not only will the title be shown, it will also be playable at E3 2011. Shigeru Miyamoto explained that playing it will give fans a better idea of what it's like. He also commented on the speculation regarding the temporary logo, already confirming that the tail on the end of the logo's "O" was a hint at the return of Super Mario Bros. 3's Tanooki Mario.
The four demo levels that were playable at E3 2011. The game was given a full reveal with a trailer at E3 2011 and was playable on the show floor, as previously stated. It was announced that the game was targeted for a release by the end of the year. The game was playable on the show floor and allowed attendees to try the game for themselves in four different levels - a standard plain area, an underground area, a level of switch-activated platforms, reminiscent of a few galaxies from the Super Mario Galaxy titles, and an airship level ending in a fight with Bowser's henchman, Boom Boom. In addition, the conference trailer was put up for download on the 3DS eShop. By playing the trailer on their 3DS, viewers could see the game in stereoscopic 3D effects for themselves.
Screenshots and Similarities to Past Entries in the Series
The screens show that this installment appears to have many nods towards past Mario games. The Mario model has the same look as it does in the Super Mario Galaxy series.
In the background of top left screen, you can see hills reminiscent of the ones that appear in Super Mario World.
In the bottom left screenshot, you can see that a small Mario appears, and is missing his hat. The small Mario references the 2d side-scrolling Mario games, and has not been seen in any 3d Mario game. The hat-less Mario has been seen in other Mario games, such as Super Mario 64, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 as an easter egg, often for getting a maximum number of lives.
The top right shows two recurring features: donut lifts from Super Mario World, and falling blocks from Super Mario Bros. 3.
The bottom left shows Mario jumping on colourful rotating platforms in a level aesthetically similar to Cloudy Court Galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy 2.
A Star Medal, seen in the New Super Mario Bros. series can be seen at the top. These Star Coins are used as one of the level objectives in all levels (except the final level), and are used to get into different levels of the game. They are also required to complete the game.
Release
Super Mario 3D Land was confirmed for a November 2011 release at E3 2011. The US release date was 13th November 2011. A white Nintendo 3DS comes bundled with Super Mario 3D Land (UK only). If you pre-ordered Super Mario 3D Land in Australia, you would get a free novelty Tanooki Hat. In Europe it was released on the 18th November 2011, Japan on the 3rd November and in Australia on the 24th November.
System Upgrade
In the Japanese version of Super Mario 3D Land, there was a small system upgrade included in the game cartridge. This upgrade included features such as:
- The ability join a friends online game through the use of the Nintendo 3DS's friend list.
- The ability to move through your friends list faster than usual by hold your D-Pad button and the corresponding action on the Circle Pad at the same time.
- When a friend of yours is on, they will appear in the front of your friend list, allowing you to be able to see them quickly.
- Note: This upgrade does not need WiFi, because the entire upgrade is contained within the game cartridge.
Pre-order Bonuses
For people who pre-ordered the game at Gamestop, they received a free Tanooki Mario key chain.
Beta Elements
Their were a few power-ups and enemies that were planned for the game but just didn't make the cut.
Power-ups
- Goomba Shoe
- Feather Cape(Was one of the original ideas for a "flying" power-up, but was later given up on in favor of the Tanooki Suit.)
Enemies
- Gold Tanooki Goombas (They can hover farther then regular Tanooki Goombas.)
There was also some beta levels including one with arrow lifts and an open are that looked similar to Yoshi Star Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy 2. Tanooki Mario also had some different ideas for his look. There was the idea for him to look more like Raccoon Mario from Super Mario Bros. 3. There was also one that looked more like a vest, but ultimately they decided on the Tanooki Mario you see in the game.
- In the E3 2011 demo, the maximum number of lives was 99. Also in the demo, touching the midway flag would give you an extra 100 seconds.

Cheats
- Unlimited Wall Jumps:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6bX5SNILQI&feature=youtu.be
- Unlimited Lives (1-Ups) (Credit: Red Link):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTs0rYTqKUc&feature=youtu.be
- Unlimited Lives (1-Ups) In level 1-2, you can constantly jump on a Koopa Shell to get lots of 1-Ups. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQX5qOeki-I
- Unlimited Lives (1-Ups) You can get unlimited 1-Ups in World 4-1 by jumping on a Koopa Shell in a shallow water puddle near the start of the level.
- World 7-1 Shortcut (Credit: nintendude1229) Power-up needed: Tanooki Mario. In World 7-1, you will see that right in front of where the level starts is the flagpole, seperated by a pool of water, taking you through the level. Instead of going in the water, however, you can simply flutter-jump to the other side using Tanooki Mario. This makes doing a speed run of the level much faster.
- World 2 shortcut.
In the area where you perform the unlimited lives trick in World 1-2, jump on a ? block in the air and then jump up towards the wall it's against. If done correctly you should be in a hidden path above the level. Follow the path and you should reach an orange pipe that leads directly to World 2.
- Bobble heads on the Postcards.
When viewing the postcards you receive throughout the game, shake the Nintendo 3DS to watch characters heads move and even cool little easter eggs appear, like Luigi in the background of a postcard.
- 5 Stars on profile
To get 5 Stars beside your profile, follow these steps:
Star 1: Beat Bowser in World 8
Star 2: Beat every level as Mario, including Special 8-Crown. You can tell if you've beaten a level with Mario because their should be a bottom bar on the top screen with an M on it. If there's no M, you haven't beaten that level with Mario.
Star 3: Beat every level as Luigi, including Special 8-Crown. Again, you can tell if you've beaten a level with Luigi if there's an L on the top screen.
Star 4: Get the Gold Flag in every level by jumping on the top of the end flagpole. You can tell if you've beaten a level with a Gold Flag because there should be a Gold Flag icon in the same place you would see an M or L on the top screen.
Star 5: Get every Star Coin in the game, including the Special Worlds. There are no Star Coins in Special 8-Crown.
Shiny Stars: To get the stars beside your profile to shine, you can never die more than 5 times in a level. That means that if you have died more than 5 times in a level, you can simply soft-reset your game (L+R+Start) so that you can try again.
Easter Eggs
- Maximum lives
One of the better known Easter Eggs. If you have the maximum number of lives (1,110) Small Mario or Luigi will have their cap on and Super Mario or Luigi will not.
- Extra screenshot
After beating all of the Special Worlds, go back to World 8-Castle 2 and beat Bowser again. You should get another screenshot depicting Princess Peach and a couple of Toads in Tanooki Suits.
- Mario's hints
In any level, Mario (or Luigi) can sometimes show you where a secret is. If they're looking in a different direction, go in that direction. If they're looking up, jump. Chances are, there's a hidden ? Block.
- Secret 1-Ups (World 1-1)
In the first area in World 1-1, run all the way to the right. Then, jump down the ledge. You should see a box blocking an entrance to a cave. Smash the box and go in, and keep running. You should get a 1-Up Mushroom. After you get out of the cave, jump onto the yellow platform. Either use the tree beside it or use the grassy area above. Run down that platform and onto a blue one and then onto another yellow platform. A bird will you give you a 1-Up Mushroom.
- Infinite 1-Ups (World 1-2)
Shortly after the checkpoint in World 1-2, you should come across a Koopa Troopa beside a 3 block long ? Block on the ground. Jump on the ? Block, then on the Koopa Troopa, making sure that you're facing the "invisible wall" (the wall that's closest to you, the player). As long as you don't jump off the Koopa Troopa's shell, you will keep getting 1-Ups.
- UFO (World 1-3)
At the beginning of World 1-3, you should see a periscope. Run up to it and look into it. Wait for a little bit and you should see a UFO in the distance. It helps if you zoom in once you see it to get a proper look at it.
- Secret 1-Ups (World 2-3, Special 1-3)
In World 2-3, go all of the way to the end of the level. Then, when you see the 8-bit castle beside the flag pole, go in the black door. You will be transported to a place that looks like an 8-bit 1-Up Mushroom, that has a 1-Up Mushroom on it. In Special 1-3, it is the same. Go in the door, and you will be given a 1-Up Mushroom.
- The Legend of Zelda reference (World 5-2)
Probably the most well known of all the Easter Eggs in the game. This is used to celebrate The Legend of Zelda's 25th Anniversary. World 5-2 is supposed to look like a level from The Legend of Zelda, where the view is from a bird's eye view. Also, if you light all of the torches in one of the rooms using a Fire Flower, the "secret found" sound effect from the original The Legend of Zelda will play, and you will open a new room. In this room you will find a timer that gives you an extra 100 seconds and another Star Coin.
