Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance Takes Top Spot In Japanese Game Charts

Spiky-haired Disney-Square-Enix crossover makes its mark in its homeland. 3DS hardware sales see improvements as a result!

The best things in life are free. But you can give them to the birds and the bees; I want money! That’s what I want!

Awkwardly-shoehorned-in song lyrics aside, one company who will be seeing plenty of money is good old Square-Enix. With Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance having emerged triumphantly onto store shelves across Nippon, sales of the title have been sufficiently impressive to see it take the crown in latest sales figures.

So angry!

Dude, cheer up! They like you in Japan!

Andriasang have, as reliably as ever, brought the Japanese videogame sales figures to the fore. It’s another good showing for the Nintendo 3DS, partly thanks to Kingdom Hearts 3D shifting some 213,579 copies, eclipsing the competition in so doing.

The closest competition, in fact, came from the PlayStation 3’s Pro Baseball Spirits 2012, which shifted 90,433 units; far less than half of Kingdom Hearts 3D‘s total. This just goes to show how much the Japanese love hitting monsters with oversized keys!

The release of the RPG epic saw a welcome jump in 3DS hardware sales too. Whilst the 3DS sold an impressive 94,011 last week, the prospect of a new RPG tempted gamers into causing that figure to spring up to a lofty 121,921.

That’s a lot of new potential StreetPass buddies right there! If you live in Japan, that is.

In other news, Kid Icarus Uprising placed fourth in Japan this week, with 47,179 copies flying out the door. Hot on its heels in fifth was the recently-confirmed-for-Western-release Pokemon + Nobunaga’s Ambition. This regular, good ol’ DS game shifted 30,535 copies.

All in all, the 3DS continues to be growing in popularity in Japan. As a new slew of heavy hitters arrives in stores, the charts are repeatedly conquered by new 3DS titles. It’s a far cry from those long-ago memories of the system struggling to find the footing it deserved, and hopefully things will continue to improve for a long time to come!

Will Kingdom Hearts 3D similarly set the charts ablaze when it arrives in our territories? Time will tell…

Good to hear! Now we just need official release dates from Square Enix for North America, Europe and Australia.
