Kingdom Hearts 3D To Share Many Story Secrets

Plot threads left dangling over the course of the series will see sweet resolution in the 3DS instalment of the Disney-Square-Enix mashup RPG.

You’ve probably noticed this for yourself, as you’re a perceptive person and such, but… Kingdom Hearts has quite a complex narrative, doesn’t it?

It’s no surprise considering it comes from the bubbling plot-brains of Square-Enix, who have recently left HD console owners scratching their heads in befuddlement at time-travel confuse-o-game Final Fantasy XIII-2.

But for us, the big Square-Enix project on the horizon is Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. And according to Siliconera, that very game’s set to tie up a lot of loose ends.

Does anything in this image strike you as odd?

Tetsuya Nomura, Square-Enix stalwart and overseer of the Kingdom Hearts series, has been waxing lyrical to Famitsu magazine. Our upcoming 3DS game seems set to give fans some much-requested answers regarding some of the lead characters.

Nomura-san explains:

“If I had to say who the key persons were, I’d say they are the silver haired boy and Axel. This time at the end of the story, there will be the longest cutscene of the whole series where the true form of Ansem and Xemnas, as well as their goals and many other truths will be revealed all at once.”

Longest cutscene of the whole series? Yikes! Square-Enix are already known for their long cutscenes, so… better keep that charging cable handy. Imagine watching a cutscene for several long minutes, waiting for the big reveal, desperately ignoring the flashing red light on your handheld… only to have it lose power just as a key character starts saying, “Okay, the truth of the whole thing is…”

As an aside, Mr. Nomura also revealed that the game’s new Ability Link feature is a fusion of ideas from other games. Initially wanting to replicate the ‘command board’ of Birth By Sleep, Nomura-san instead blended the growth systems of Re:Coded and 358/2 Days. The end result was the Ability Link system as seen in Dream Drop Distance.

So that’s nice.

The game’s set to hit Japan at the end of the month, and we’ll be readying our oversized keys and enormous shoes in preparation of it coming to the West!
