Details are a bit thin on the ground right now but Nintendo has just announced that it is set to release a new handheld system. This won’t be another version of the Nintendo DS, this really is an all new console. It is due for release before March 2011. The system will be on show and even playable at this year’s E3 show in June.

A successor to the DS has been on the cards for a long time and rumours have been circulating about possible features for just as long, but no one had predicted at what Nintendo had in store. The new console is likely to be named the Nintendo 3DS as it will incorporate 3D technology. This won’t be the kind of 3D we’re used to seeing though. Nintendo says you won’t need to wear 3D glasses to get the 3D experience. 3D without glasses has been seen before in TVs but nothing has yet been available to the consumer.

The first of many "artist impressions" of the 3DS you'll be seeing here until the E3 show.

Nintendo have confirmed that the 3DS will be compatible with DS and DSi games.

These are all the details that have been officially announced but recently Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata told a Japanese newspaper that the company was working on a successor to the DS which would have “highly detailed graphics” and a sensor which would track the movements of players.

There have also been rumours that NVIDIA is providing the graphics processor for a new handheld system.

That’s all the info I have for now but check back here for the latest news updates on the Nintendo 3DS.

One day Adam had a vision, and that vision was in 3D. After a while his eyes started to hurt so he looked away from the vision and started making a website about the 3DS instead of playing it, and so 3DS Buzz was born.

  1. [...] but you might need to brace yourself for some bad news regarding the 3DS release date. It’s been 6 months since Nintendo provided any news on a 3DS release date outside of Japan. Back in March we were told [...]

The post that started it all. Wow. You’ve come a very long way since then, Adam.

For some reason, I really enjoy going back and looking into big sites’ earliest days. It’s also why I write a short essay-type…thing when I start a new site, because I’m sure there are people who will read it even if the site has turned into an empire or something by then.

You’ve done a commendable job managing this site, and I have nothing but the brightest hopes for its future. ;)

  3. MrComment says:

    Thanks Peter :-)

You've played a large part in how far it's come too.

All but two of the comments here are from long after this post was made. Isn’t that funny?
I remember reading this article when it wasn’t that old, wondering about what I could find out about it, coming to nintendo3ds.org.uk most days. Time felt slow then, but now it feels like it actually flew by.
Also, anybody else notice that smiley face in the bottom left corner of the page?
