Nintendo and DreamWorks Team up to Fill Your 3DS With Video Content

3net and The Blue Man Group are helping too!

Video game consoles these days seem to be doing a lot more than just playing games, and the latest generation of handhelds are no different. The 3DS can already take 3D pictures, view Netflix, browse the internet and, of course, view specially selected 3D videos; Nintendo of America has announced yesterday, however, that it plans to provide additional 3D video content through it’s new partnership with DreamWorks Animation, 3net and Blue Man Group.

Monsters Vs. Aliens

Finally! I'm part of the Nintendo empire!

Via Nintendo’s press release:

DreamWorks Animation will provide two new Halloween-themed animated shorts that will premiere on the Nintendo Video service this month. For a limited time, the videos will be available exclusively on Nintendo 3DS. The first video is available starting today and features characters from the studio’s 2009 release Monsters vs. Aliens. Another video featuring the three little German pigs from the Shrek franchise will appear later this month.

In addition, 3net, a joint venture of Discovery Communications, Sony and IMAX, will provide short-form video content from the 3net network’s original series on an ongoing basis including Bullproof, the story of four bull riders; Feeding Time, an up-close look at adorable animals such as pandas, penguins, lemurs and otters; and Building the Brand, a series that explores the creation of some of the world’s most iconic products.

The Blue Man Group series of videos culminates this month with the sixth and final video, “The Remote,” which showcases Blue Man Group’s signature blend of humor, infectious music and theatrical flair. The videos will reappear occasionally on Nintendo Video on a rerun basis.

Those of you in North America will find, as of now, the new Monsters vs. Aliens Halloween short in your Nintendo Video application. It’s also interesting to see the Blue Man Group’s involvement, and more intriguing still, 3net, which of course includes Sony, Nintendo’s direct competitor in the handheld market (though from a different branch of Sony’s empire).

So what do you think of Nintendo’s new direction it’s taking for it’s 3D video content? Is it a step above College Humor and OK Go, or do you prefer the content you were already receiving? Perhaps a mix of it all? Sound off in the comments below.

    I felt OK GO was kind of a stupid band. I never heard of them before, until I saw those videos. College Humor? I could expect no better from Nintendo. I think Nintendo is a dying breed. The release of the Wii-U, which I think will flop will seal Nintendo’s falling behind the pack.

  2. Jets555 says:

    I got the german pigs video first! not the monsters vs aliens one. Did this happen to others?

  3. Jets555 says:

    Lets face it, Blueman group sucks and so does OK GO, but these videos are the best. I loved the german pigs one

  4. TradeMark says:

    @Jets555

    I agree with you on the Blueman group, but the OK GO videos are petty good. I’m really disappointed with the Collegehumor videos. They usually make quality work pretty consistently, but there 3DS videos just aren’t up to snuff. Doing some Dorkly Bits in 3D would be pretty awesome. The only really good animation video that has been released on Nintendo Video is “the 3D-Machine”. All in all, Nintendo Video is okay, but it could be so much more. It needs a major overhaul and some more support so we can get videos more consistently (I was expecting them to be daily when it first start).

  5. Totodile says:

    I don’t have the Monsters vs Aliens Halloween… &I am in North America … D:

  6. Wade says:

    so this service is completely useless to me, im in iraq

  7. Jimerzzz says:

    I like the college humor shorts.. Dinosaur office has been my favorite by far.

  8. Brony Bronson says:

    I liked the first ok go video only because i like dogs. Someone did
    An awesome job training them. But after i saw the next one
    I’m calling them OK GROSS, i could almost smell the ball sweat.

  9. john316 says:

    Dinosaur office and Bearshark are my favorites

  10. J@ke says:

    Oh god not monsters vs aliens. Worst frigging movie ever. Leave Nintendo alone!!

  11. 3dbrains says:

    THIS is why the 3DS will be successfull. This and this alone. 3D movies, 3D tv, 3D music videos, 3D comedy.

    Nintendo’s little machine is the ONLY way to get this content.

  12. jets555 says:

    I dont find the college humour ones funny. They are entertaining but not funny

  13. 389 blade says:

    blue man group are they having a laugh!! i mean honestly its bad enough that A) nintendo realeased the console before it was ready B) the games they realeased with it were not good (except for street fighter) C) for some reason nintendo think its ok to put out 10 to 20 year old games on eshop and then charge me £3.00 to £7.20 for them D) then announce that they are bringing out a second slide pad that also requires a battery but doesnt work with all my games and I HAVE TO PAY FOR IT AGAIN!!! ambassador program , should be called the sucker punch program as nintendo really know how to stick it to me. i was an ardent nintendo fan but now i feel let down and i am currently selling my 3ds on ebay . if it wasnt for zelda i would have sold it earlier thanks nintendo but never again…never.

  14. R4 Master says:

    Considering the relatively short 3DS battery life, what kind of effect will these downloads have? If you are travelling and have no access to a wall socket to charge the thing, a laptop could be the better (and less power-hungry) option …. And not bugger your eyes by starring at the tiny screen for hours.

  15. Azy says:

    Nintendo Video sucks. They would have been better off just doing without it. Or at least waiting till they had a good, full service before releasing it. It’s like an empty fridge. I keep going back to it but nothing new or interesting appears.

  16. 3dbrains says:

    @R4 Master
    This has an effect on battery, yes, but it is minimal. Nintendo downloads updates are carried out in the ‘background’ while you do what you are doing (or even nothing at all) and uses hardly any extra power as the 3DS switches on the wifi every 2 minutes for spotpass checks anyway and these updates are downloaded in just a few seconds. The videos are very small in size and are stored on your 3DS for use whenever you want. These are then overwritten at a later date by other content.
    As for your eyes, the 3DS screen is a very comfortable size to watch a 3D/2D movie on. It is also only a SMALL percentage of people who have problems looking at the 3D.

    Did no one notice that it says SONY are releasing 3DS content?? or did i read that wrong?

  17. so980 says:

    @Azy Same here…..

  18. Jets555 says:

    @ Azy Nintendo didn’t have to make nintendo video, they made it for us so really you have no right to complain cause you’re getting the videos for free.

  19. Premier says:

    This is just great. I have to fear every time I go to Nintendo Video, I’m going to have to see a Mickey Mouse episode. This is just as bad if Sesame Street were to teem up with Nintendo.
    Shoot! We could have the whole schedule of PBS on Nintendo Video. That’s just what we gamers need! Mickey Mouse and Sesame Street! NO, this is a terrible idea. Why, Nintendo, WHY?? I’m okay with Pop music videos on the Nintendo Video along with game trailers, but this is beyond that.

  20. mirrorkirbyred says:

    @premier they teamed up with DreamWorks not Disney, and whats wrong with Mickey. Also they released the German “pig who cried werewolf” first ( Jet555 you are not alone). I think its a typo.

  21. pasta power! says:

    @Premier

    I give Jim Henson full credit for sesame street, I mean the puppet art is good…but I agree. Little kids can’t even view 3D, so it’s pointless!

  22. pasta power! says:

    I still love nintendo video.

  23. robbie says:

    @all of you who have something bad to say about the 3DS

    Ok you guys if the 3DS is THAT BAD then why don’t you just sell it on E-bay. Personaly, I love my 3DS and use it almost every day and from what it sounds you guys think your 3DS is a steaming pile of SH*T!. I’m SO SORRY Nintendo wants to give you guys free stuff.

  24. Ridley says:

    Ok Go is a HORRIBLE band.I don’t think Nintendo needed to give us that for an update.But I agree with you,robbie,the 3DS is not a pile of rancid crap like some say…not like the rancid stuff right here,’cause I’m typing this in the bathroom.

  25. R4 Master says:

    If Nintendo really want us to appreciate the free video downloads, they should make a movie of Krystal …. An 18-rated one. (well it would make of happy anyway) XD

  26. lemonlime says:

    Dreamworks? No Pixar? WHAT IS THIS MADNESS

  27. 3dsgamer says:

    nintendo video is not as a amusing as the games but every thing is pretty cool overall
