NIS America Expresses Concern for Cave Story 3D’s Future

Could Mario’s dual-release this holiday season overshadow Cave Story 3D?

It can be hard competing against the likes of Mario. After all, between being the best-selling video game franchise to date, as well as Nintendo’s head mascot, it isn’t hard to see that the legendary plumber is a chart-dominating force to be reckoned with. His influence upon this holiday season’s lineup will be no different. With the release of Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 fast approaching, it appears that the man in the red cap will claim dominance once again over the Christmas sales charts.

Cave Story 3D looks gorgeous, but can it stand up to Super Mario 3D Land?

However, while this means a massive increase in revenue for Nintendo, it can be little short of a sales barrier for 3rd party developers. NIS America, in particular, seems to be feeling the heat with their upcoming release of Cave Story 3D. An early 3DS supporter, NIS America’s 3D rendition of the classic Cave Story was originally meant to launch last summer, but was eventually moved to the upcoming holiday season due to poor console sales. However, thanks to the timely—or untimely—Mario release dates, NIS America now fears that their game will get overshadowed by the larger Nintendo titles, as is evident in a recent interview with the company’s president, Haru Akenaga:

I’m really worried about sales for Cave Story…. Actually, we could have released the title in the summer of this year, but the market was not great then. Almost all of the retailers did not want to carry 3DS titles that were not AAA titles. That’s why we postponed the release of Cave Story until the market conditions improved. Now there are many big titles coming and that should be better for 3DS. I hope Cave Story will have reorders and always have a spot on store shelves.

While Cave Story sold well on DSiWare and WiiWare, could the upgraded 3D version fall before the almighty Mario? Should NIS America have taken a chance earlier on? Or were they wise in holding it back until this holiday season?

I don’t plan on picking up Cave Story 3D so maybe they do have something to worry about. Nintendo’s first party games are usually the best by my standards.

  2. Remy says:

i think they are better of releasing the game next year.

  3. Mariomaster1 says:

Hmmm, this could be quite the predicament……but I’m sure many people will still get this game, either to pass the time waiting for other games or mainly because it’s a 3D remake of the well acclaimed Cave Story. There is some worry over the close release dates, but the game is likely to still sell quite a few copies…….I say just go with it.

  4. hello says:

Why do third parties act so stupid when publishing games on Nintendo platforms? Since the 3ds launched they had an open field to release any amount of games they wanted to, without having to compete with Nintendo first party titles this Christmas. Now that Nintendo is releasing first party and picking up the slack (again!) to make the platform commercially viable they complain! Sorry but its no ones fault but third parties. In fact I want the Nis games to suffer for holding back content on the 3ds, good riddens to them.

  5. PVR says:

It’s NIS’s fault if it doesn’t sell well, had they released it in august where the only good title available was Devil Survivor they would certainly have had more chances, now they push every title to November, no wonder it will become a suffocated month.

  6. gamer boy says:

i think they should release it next next year because of all the good games coming out holiday season. Its also not just the 3ds that has good games coming out. first someone will choose what they would get this holiday then see if he want a 3ds game. but as soon as u look at the 3ds games you will see TWO big mario games coming out and i think it would be pretty hard to notice all the other titles with those two selling out. i think they should wait next year. i think they should realease it in the conditions like starfox 3d. when starfox released there where no other good game at the time and its a pretty good game to begin with so it is a good choice. but releasing a game like cave story who isnt as popular as mario at the same time is just a fail. i mean if you were to release a game like cave story with nothing else coming out at the same time it would sell pretty good. i dont know thats just what i think. im not hating on cave story or anything i just think this isnt the right time to put it on the shelves with not just one mario title but TWO. im just saying.

  7. kindricks says:

i’m gonna buy it and if you guys have the money i say you do too because we might get a cave story 2 where there life’s drop from original cave story’s story droped off story where —– and qoute ride of with ——– to god knows where XD

  8. pasta power! says:

    Whatever. I’m getting both!

  9. Hunthe says:

Im getting all three… but I love this game so much!

  10. trimbetoon says:

I think the game will suffer due to Mario Land / Kart but as PVR says, they should have released it earlier in the year if it was ready when there was an total lack of decent games – I’ve got no sympathy for a developer who holds back a game because they dont think a console is selling well enough – surely they should realise that consoles sell better when there are more games available for them. Developers were complaining that the 3ds wasnt selling well enough due to a lack of games – now they’re complaining that there’s going to be too many good games available? Sorry NIS but you cant have it both ways!

  11. Ridley says:

I do not like this game all that much, but I think that they would have been better off launching it in the summer, because 1.That game COULD’VE improved the market conditions and 2.It’s not like it could’ve done better in the holiday season,’cause people will be ALL OVER Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 and Sonic Generations and stuff,so people can’t get their grimy hands on games whenever they want, they need to think about MONEY,you know.

  12. Ridley says:

    And,Remmy,that’s RIDICULOUS.No offense.

  13. Ridley says:

    Sorry,I spelled your name wrong.

  14. Pseudonymous says:

    Heh.

“Hey, Nintendo! Delay your first party titles so us third parties get a chance!” → Console doesn’t sell well. → Third parties are afraid of releasing things for it.

Nintendo releases big first party titles. → Console sales pick up. → Third parties are afraid of releasing things because they’d have to compete against Nintendo titles.

  15. Timmy123 says:

Nah, I think I’ll pass up this one. The game doesn’t look very appealing. The developers have good reason to worry about the games’ sales.

  16. mario123 says:

cave story is awesome but i am only going to get mk7 and sm3dl

  17. IrishYort says:

2 things wrong with this whole thing.
#1 They should have released this in August anyway
#2 They should release it as an eShop game as well

1 thing they dont have to worry about is that, if it is priced correctly and at the price it “should” be (less than 1/2 the price of a premium title), it will probably fly off the shelves anyway. If they try to sell it at a premium price, they’ll get what they deserve. But in all reality, I’d buy this for $15 AU in a heartbeat on the eShop.

  18. Venox2008 says:

I have finished Cave story on Wiiware, but I’m still getting this one (with Mario 3D of course and maybe Shinobi) .. it has longer levels, gorgeus 3D graphics…. AND I LOVE CAVE STORY :)

  19. Jubei-X says:

I am getting this game as well. I believe it’s worth it.

  20. kindricks says:

i changed my mind i’m not gonna get just gonna get skyward sword, super mario 3d land, sonic generations, and mario kart 7

  21. pasta power! says:

    @kindricks

    SAME.

  22. robbie says:

I really don’t know what you guys see in this game … its realy boring and I bought it just to see what all the fuss is about so heres how I rated it …

Music : Everybody sais the game has good music but it sounds no better than Super Mario Bros. on the NES. 0/5

Graphics : I know they’re supposed to look old but they still weren’t anything special once again mario on the Nes looks better. 0/5
Controls : slippery and stayed that way the whole time 0/5
    Story : Retarded 0/5

So yeah All I said when I finished it was ”Waste of 10 bucks”

  23. kindricks says:

@robbie I changed my mind because of story. I just don’t see how all the parts fit together. It’s like trying to solve a wight jigsaw puzzle, And now you mention it. I have fallen in some death pits blame on controls. Also, when the doctor falls in the pit i don’t see what helps an old man heal by watching him fall 30 feet, fall on some stone rocks, And to just leave him there while you jump over his head. So Robbie you hit all of the points why I’ve decided to save my money. owo

  24. Guybrush Threepwood says:

I’ll tell you. I loved Cave Story before it got big and famous. But honestly, this 3D remake looks like crap. All the screenshots I’ve seen, it’s almost impossible to see Quote (Oops…. Spoiler?) The new graphics look worse than the sprited graphics, which I thought were beautiful.
Also, the music was great! I have the sound track on my ipod. You guys are just crazy. Play the original on the PC and then come talk to me. All these remakes just don’t live up to the original for many reasons. Controls got crappy, the early releases of the Wiiware Cave Story didn’t have a drum track so the music sounded… awkward. And the slightly bumped up graphics looked worse than the original. So, yeah.
Anyway, despite this. I’m still looking forward to Cave Story 3D. Just because I’m interested to see how it works in the 3D plane.

  25. Lcpltom says:

These guys did this to themselves and I have no pity for them.

When Nintendo released the 3DS they did so without any major first party games. The reason for this was to give 3rd party publishers the lead in an attempt to establish better 3rd party support for Nintendo hardware. Lots of 3rd party publishers expressed interest in making games fir the 3DS, but few followed through. Too many took a ‘wait and see’ approach. The support Nintendo was expecting just wasn’t there. It’s a mistake I hope Nintendo never makes again.

NIS should have also been expecting that Nintendo had something for the holiday season. It would have been suicide not to. Even if no one knew what was coming, it should have been obvious to everyone, even NIS, that something was coming. Considering this game is probably ready now, they would be wise to rush this to release and get a little bit of time before Mario is released.

I never heard of this game before it was released on the WiiWare service. I’m a little out of touch when it comes to new games. I first tried it when a demo of it was offered on WiiWare. I really liked this game. I put off purchasing it until I had played the games I already had. Then I heard there would be an updated 3DS version. Snce I planned on purchasing a 3DS, I decided to wait and buy it when the 3DS version came out. Then they delayed it due to ‘poor hardware sales’ just like all the other 3rd party developers that left Nintendo out in the cold. At this point, I am seriously considering not purchasing any instance of this game, not 3DS, not WiiWare, and not DSiWare, just as my way of expressing my disappointment in a publisher not fulfilling their commitment to Nintendo. Knowing that NIS is worried about a situation they created for themselves has quashed most of the interest I had for this game.

  26. acer33 says:

it was there choice instead of using at launch so who care about this old remake

  27. OwO says:

@Robbie Your a really bad critic XDDD that review made me laugh so hard :P

  28. acer33 says:

they were not loyal to nintendo but what do they want make nintendo do and then lad them to the nintendo 4ds they wont stand a chance like ever with angry birds mario
sonic ravalations or metal gear solid even the sims 3 pets or is the only loyal companys ea and ubisoft

  29. Sam Loser2 says:

I’ve been trying profusely to get this game, but I have not seen it at Wal-mart, K-mart or Target. It also wasn’t available at Play-in-Trade (even though the computer said they had a used copy, no one could find it, getting my hopes for the 3D version at the same price as the download up for nothing) and two separate Game Stops sold their last copy a few days before I checked with them. What, am I cursed or something?
