PSP keeps up with 3DS in Japan
In Japan, the video game market allows for the PSP and the 3DS to remain neck-in-neck in sales numbers.
The 3DS is now available around the world, and back in Japan 3DS sales are still relatively high. However, this week the PSP has nearly caught up in sales numbers, with the Nintendo selling 50,710 units, and Sony selling 50,479, according to Media Create.

This is good news for Sony, considering that their now six year old system is keeping up with the brand new 3DS, which has only been on the market for a month in Japan, and dropped as recently as last Thursday in Australia. One reason for the numbers could be attributed simply to game titles available for each system. Gamers may be holding out on the 3DS until more titles are ready to play–expect a spike in sales once Nintendo releases some of their most anticipated first-party games such as Zelda and Super Mario. Last week Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection was released for the PSP, drawing in plenty players loyal to the Final Fantasy series. Both Dynasty Warriors 7 and Monster Hunter 3 are hugely popular titles for the PSP, and both have been released within the last three months.
Currently in Japan, the PSP holds six out of the top ten best selling video games, with the 3DS holding three slots. The fact that the PSP can keep up with the 3DS so well, regardless of how long it’s been on the market, sends a positive message for the future of handheld gaming. It means that we as gamers are interested in and can sustain a market that celebrates variety. The 3DS has done well in other countries as well, breaking records in America and setting a precedent for sales in the UK. If the numbers in Japan are reflected in other markets over the next month is yet to be seen, but based on titles being released and the success of both the 3DS and PSP around the world, this gamer is hopeful that both systems do well.

enough already move on nothing to see here….lets look at 3DS vs PSP everywere else in the world looking for conflict is poor jurnalism
true, it shows even more the games sell the system, not the system itself that calls more costumers.
we”ll see when oot and mario is out
unlike nintendo, the psp is selling a lot because of 3rd party titles, since god of war has gotten old. Nintendo can pull out animal crossing, mario, mario kart, zelda, donkey kong, and a lot more when they want…there the system will sell like water.
The 3DS is head to head with the PSP because the current titles aren’t very good, and the PSP is getting some very good AAA titles…which means in therms of proportionality the PSP is screwed anyways.
PSP sucks. Period.
@3DS Fanboy
Have you ever owned one? It has features that Nintendo have only just implemented into their systems and has been around for six years, it basically does everything the 3DS does bar a 3D screen and all of Nintendo’s franchises. Don’t get me wrong I love my 3DS, but the PSP is a brilliant system even though it has a weak software library and gets too much crap from fanboys. It deserves a look by all lovers of handheld consoles and can be picked up pretty cheap on ebay.
just wait till we get more games
According to my toughts and experience the japanese people buy the psp just for Monster Hunter and Dissidia. BTW Awesome games!
I think it is good that PSP is doing well, heats up the field ;D I own a ps3 and psp and they’re really good, I can’t help loving LBP xD I like Sony and I like Gamecube, but to be honest, am holding out on 3Ds till I see something worth getting ‘Super Mario 3Ds, Mario Kart, A Crossing, OoT and Paper Mario’ Can’t wait =]
@3DS Fanboy
Wrong psp sucks BALLZ period.
Part of it also is the recent price drops as well a psp go is $100 cheaper than the 3ds I personally don’t have a 3ds yet but I will as soon as nintendo follows through on all of their promises and releases all of the games worth buying I have a psp 3000 and I can see why so many real gamers like it because like the ds lite it is cheap because of limited extras while focusing on what really matters and the psp just never caught on. The good of the iPod touch is that it made more casual gamers into hardcore gamers it may be hard now to keep up with dollar games but in a few years I could see that changing as people get tiered of flying birds and evil pigs and seek out real games

It’s just because Sony has made the price so low that they almost dont get profit. That and they include some free games.
uhh most of u are going to play cooking mama while i play uncharted or cod on ngp
3DS is nothing special in terms of hardware or software. It actually has a lower CPU and graphical power than the original psp 1000. The only saving grace is the 3d element which sucks and that tiny little screen screws even my 20/20 vision up. Couple that with a bunch of old ports on release date and that’s why 3DS bombed. I’d take Disiddia, Peacewalker, 3rd Birthday over Super Mario any day of the weak. Also to say the psp has no games is stupid, there are hundreds of great games. I have a collection of 170 UMD games and these are just the best ones!! 3DS is old tech wrapped up in a shiny new 3d case, 1 analogue stick, poor quality, it costs 100 dollars to make a 3DS and how do they sell for. Nintendo have made a new chapter for themselves I agree but Sony will finish the story! NGP is just around the corner and I’m telling you it’s gonna blow conventional handheld gaming out the window! Still love my psp collection though never been a DS(girl toy) kinda guy!
@Just me
Yeah, Monster Hunter and Final Fantasy are both huge franchises overseas in Japan; with the release of a new Monster Hunter game AND a FF remake bundle in Japan, PSP sales went WAAAAAY up. It’s no surprise over there, but I doubt you’ll see PSP sales getting that high in the US. It’s sad that nobody can think of good games, because I can name plenty; it seems like it’s the most underappreciated console on the market right about now.
@-.-
I hate how people, even Sony fanboys, complain about the game library. I have never been lacking in the “good game” department. Dissidia, Phantasy Star, Valkyria Chronicles, Metal Gear Solid, Burnout and Crisis Core are all wonderful games that people just don’t notice. Patapon is pretty fun as well, and LocoRoco is a new experience for me. There’s just so many options! My question is, why doesn’t anybody notice the good stuff for it?
Sony hit the high point in it’s life with the PS2 since then it’s hardware and software has gone downhill. It’s clearly all down to Final Fantasy just wait till 3DS has some better games out, I’m going to become poor.
@-.-
They do suck though, they’re laggy, have crap frame rates. Most of the games are crappy. DS with it’s terrible graphics and hardly anything to do apart from games out sold the PSP by millions. 3DS FTW!!
the psp is a great handheld, plus the price drop will attract people.
the psp sucks
im not a fan boy but im not geting the next genration console because the touch pad is just a daft idea unless you have to sets of thumbs i dont think will work very well in games im not agaisnt sony but they need to rethink i mean they can pack all the power thy can in the psp but im a little bored of put more power in the psp would of out sold the ds if it its libary was as vast as ds if they dont do many good games history will repeat itself the only company i dont like is apple there will kill gameing for all of us with there 1£ games
