You Can’t Delete Your Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D Save Data

Capcom’s Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D won’t allow you to reset (read: delete) saved data from its cartridge. The limitation was discovered in the Japanese version of the game but has been confirmed for the U.S. edition via a scan of the manual posted online.
Why would the developer prevent you from deleting this data? According to Tiny Cartridge the prevailing theory is to discourage used game sales. If you pick it up second-hand there’s a good chance the game will be completed and you’ll have no way to start over from the beginning, pretty much forcing you to buy a full-price new copy to play the full experience.
However, even if you’ve bought the game new and one day decide that you want to play through again you’re still screwed.
I’m not opposed to combating pre-owned game sales but when your method also impacts those who paid for a new copy at full price… that’s just not cool.

Whoa. That’s terrible, actually. I restart my favorite games quite often – I don’t think I’ve ever had a Pokemon game I haven’t played through more than once, I go through most Metroid games more than once, the Mario games are good for replaying… so, this is very bad news. And what if you want to try playing through using a different skill set? Stopping you from erasing save data stops you from exploring all the customization options, which is really annoying.
If there are multiple saves, this ain’t a problem. Any confirmation?
I looked forward to this game but now I think I’ll have to skip it cause I don’t wanna give my money to a**holes!
They should atleast have made like a special code to delete your save data.

I believe people are over reacting a bit. Think about this, why would one want to restart a game like this? I agree that it is stupid that people have to buy a new copy to start over (nobody has much money these days), but in the long run it doen’t effect me. I’m still supporting this game.
Why even bother resetting savefiles? This is Mercenaries, there is no plot whatsoever and you can always re-do the mission anyway, what’s the point?

I really want this game, can’t you upgrade diffrent skills by replaying the missions. It’s still rubbish that you can’t re start because it then feels like a waste of money. Stupid corprate greedy b*****ds!

Like others said, there’s no plot, and the missions can be re-done.
There’s absolutely no reason to have to reset, unless I’m not understanding some of the game mechanics.
cancelled my pre-order, not buying any game no matter what, that adopts such crap money making schemes. I never buy pre-owned games anyway, or play them again; but nevertheless I like the ability to do so.

Resident Evil 4 didn’t let one get rid of saved files.
There are probably 20 or so files like in RE 4.
Does this really matter? Why would you want to delete your saved data anyway? You can just do the same mission again and try and beat your highscores!!
I hope they dont do this with Revelations though, because on Revelations you would want to restart, unless there is more than one save file

Ugh, all the trolls here… While this is disappointing, I’m sure there’s a way to reset the save data somehow (third-party device maybe like an AR). As much as I love used games, Capcom just wants to help this title sell well new. A ton of other games on the 3DS allow save data deletion just fine; at least we can play those.
Pretty sure you could play through the main game multiple times. You wont lose save data, so like all your online data wont be lost, you cant re-lock characters, but I dont think they would make it so you play through the story mode and then have no option of playing through it again.

It’s good for the gamers, but bad for the companies. Any money spent on used games DOES NOT go to the Publisher and Developers. They suffer while the retailers flourish on somenone else’s hard work. It goes without saying that GameStop is the biggest offender. I could see the digital era coming faster then ever (hard to get a used game in the digital space).
Can’t believe how many if you are crying about this. The game had no plot. You can still customize your character which ever way you want. It’s all about the High scores and why the hell would you ever want to delete those? All you lot cancelling your orders will simply miss out on a great game. Suit yourselves! X
I never delete my save datas ..and i never sell my games.
This game has no plot its just high-score and general multiplayer fun, so i don’t see a reason to not buy it.
im not that bothered, the datas on the sd card so just delete it from that.

The money from used games goes to the store selling them, not the developer. It’s a great thing for us, the gamers, but capcom won’t like that.
aren’t all 3ds games saved to the SD card now, so it won’t really effect anything? i may be wrong, but just saying…

Capcom gave us lots of great games like:
Zelda games (the hand-held ones)
Monster Hunters
The Phoenix Wright series
Resident Evil series
Mega-man series
etc. etc. etc…
The game is just a ‘beat your best time/score’ game, so not a big deal.
Does it really matter with this game? I can understand if it’s some amazing story like FF or KH or something but it’s just like timed matches etc. It’s not like you can’t experience every good thing about it time and time again without resetting it as it’s just mostly scores that you’d be resetting if you could. If it was Revelations I could see the fuss but Mercenaries will be fine.
How old is everybody on this board? You’re all over reacting by cancelling your orders. You can still go back and play levels you’ve already beaten… How does this effect you since you’re buying the game new (ie: pre-ordered) and not used anyway? They’re just securing that if somebody wants their game, they have to buy it new, not used. Doesn’t sound that unreasonable to me.

not a big deal when i beat a game like this i like to go through em all again so i can hit S rank u guys remember sonic adventure? i have that game still used the same file for years just so i get S rank on the level i wanna do and this will have wi-fi i can play with my buds that live in arkansaw *i think thats how you spell it >.>* and your customizations this is not a big deal what so ever

You guys are really dumb. This type of game needs no resetting whatsoever.
This is a mission based game. It has 30 missions, all of which are re-playable. Did you read that? RE-PLAYABLE. Which means after you’re done with all 30 missions, you can simply go back to the very 1st mission & play it again. All this really does is you can’t delete your rankings on the level, I actually like having my low rank on it & then seeing my vastly improved rank just to see how much better I got. All in all this actually doesn’t affect anybody except the people who buy it used. and actually since it is like this I’m pretty sure some people are actually gonna be happy when they buy their used copy & have everything already unlocked. This isn’t gonna affect me in any way, shape, or form.
You replay the levels over and over again. If i bought this used my goal would be to destroy the high scores. I’m pumped for online co-op can’t wait one day away!!!
I LOVE all the commenters missing the point. Its not about replaying the missions, its about unlocking the characters, the progression, the sense of achievement from that, thats most of mercenaries otherwise it gets really boring really fast. If they release some character dlc its no big deal, but you buy it used you’re fucked. On top of that, precedence like they said support it now, it will be everywhere.

Second hand games don’t actually hurt companies that much – they just don’t get money directly in their pocket, so they don’t feel as secure. See, someone might not feel like spending full price for a 1st hand copy of a game if they’re not confident about the quality of the product (since demos are no longer fashionable). So, they might buy the 2nd hand version for half price. If they like it, they’re then more likely to buy from the same company, and more likely to invest in a 1st hand copy (since it feels more special). If they don’t like it, it’s not as detrimental, because they won’t complain about having to pay an extortionist price to play a game they didn’t like. So it has advertising value (and at about the same cost too no doubt as real advertisement).
But there’s also other reasons to argue for keeping the 2nd hand physical game market alive – it’s just another form of freedom. I want to OWN what I buy, and do what I like with it after, including selling it if I need to. And if I can’t buy something second hand and can’t afford it 1st hand, I simply don’t buy it. I buy another persons product, and forget about the other company. That said, in the west at least, retailers are often just as bad as game publishers, taking a lot of profit for something they probably shouldn’t be taking that much from. But that isn’t an argument against the 2nd hand market, that’s an argument against dodgy business tactics.
I never buy used games unless i rly want it and cant find it new (ex. I couldnt find a new Tetris DS anywhere, so i bought used). Also, this is a super expanded minigame, theres rly no reason to not buy it. You can probably switch your skill set up whenever you want. If they do this on Revelations, then you scream like children.

My pre order is cancelled and now i wont pre order anything for 3DS because in the second wave of games there will be at least 4 titles doing the same. Guess what Vita is cart bassed too ooops looks like the big corps are trolling gamers as the 28 Billion profit last year isn’t enough for them , music earnt a massive $6 Billion & movies got a lucrative $10 Billion so as u can see gaming is in terrible crisis being pushed into 1st place with a miserly $28 BILLION. I dont have the game, or a 3ds for that matter, but what’s so bad about not being able to restart the game? Isnt it like mercenaries the minigame? I thought there wasnt a plot to it
